So I’m still relatively new to the mp here, love the game and the mp is good. However, I am only around gold level (I had a bad run of dc which hasn’t helped this) but playing recently I have come up against some onyx players. I don’t mind a challenge I didn’t even lose all of them, but my understanding is that I should end up in matches with people around the same level as me, so silver, gold and plat. Is that not how it works or do they just pair up whats available?
You should get paired up with people around your skill level. However, depending on when you play there might not be any Gold/Plats for you to play

It pairs you with people searching and currently available to optimize search speeds over skill matching. When possible and populated enough it will skill match you accordingly.
From my understanding you get paired with equal and higher levels of CSR. Your CSR is gold so you’ll be able to go against higher levels of CSR such as platinum, diamond, onyx and champion but not bronze or silver. Its possible you’ll go against those acquiring their CSR for this season assuming there are anyone left to do that but its highly unlikely. I’m not saying this is 100% accurate but this is from my understanding.

Lol that can’t be accurate. If you can’t be paired with people below you, then what about this diamond/Onyx/champion players you said would be matched with his gold? He’s below them.
No, the matchmaking system will try to match you up with anyone else that’s close to you in rank. The issue is that the population is usually low enough that just to match people at all they have to go outside of each other’s rank zone. I.e. if there is only an Onyx and a silver on at the time then they’ll play together. But if there are two silvers and two Onyx then they’ll be matched accordingly. If you get matched outside of your rank it’s because of low population.

That seems about right. I got ranked with people higher and lower than me all the time.

This is what I thought might be happening, I was playing too late and too tired to think about it properly last night. This game is very much a “just one more…”
I think it may be due to the population in that current time.
Again, this may have to do with how often you play. In the beginning i played 2v2 random. Got a bad Allie and would go say 6-4. Now i have a friend i play with and he placed diamond. Im platinum 5 but we get ranked against onyx/champion players and consistently win but again i play 2-3 games a night and not every night . So if we won 5 straight and lose one game to champion/ champion players it’s as if my csr never goes up. Rank means nothing to me except how much time you have put into the game . So the best way for me to gauge a players skill level is to see their win percentage .

Oh yeah fair point it made sense in my head but reading back it looks like a load of -Yoink-. Thinking about it now id have to agree with what you’ve said. Either that or its completely random which I highly doubt.
