Rank Drops in Halo 5 Playlists

I recently got into an argument with a friend of mine about the ranked playlists in Halo 5. He told me that he started at a fairly high rank, but dropped down to the next rank after playing a few games. I looked it up in the strategy guide for the game, and apparently “you can never drop beneath your current rank. For example, if you’re at the first tier of the silver rank, you’ll never drop back down to Bronze.” I tested this theory using my Platinum one rank in Doubles that I got at the start of the winter 2019 season. I lost 3 games in a row but I still dropped from the Platinum one rank down to a Gold six. Can someone please explain to me, what the quote means, and why I dropped down to Gold six?

I would also like to point out that I was a Platinum one in a match with Diamonds and Onyxes.

Sometime after launch, it was changed so you could derank out of tiers. People were finding they were getting pulled up to ranks they shouldn’t be in and their rank couldn’t equalize out to where they should be because they were “rank locked.” So that was fixed and now people can move up/down through the ranks.

Just a note but you can edit your post to add more info in the future.

Touching on your Plat/Diamond/Onyx thing though, that sounds fairly reasonable as Plats/Diamonds can match and if the Plats are playing like Diamonds, matching Onyx ranks isn’t unreasonable. Or the Onyx players may have been on a bad streak and playing like Diamonds.

I mean, I see what you’re getting at, but I had multiple matches where the other team had three Onyxes and one Diamond. Going back to the main point though, so, they took out that factor all together then? To help players rank better?

I wouldn’t use the strategy guide as a current guide for the ranking system since it was heavily modified since launch. Here is a link that explains the current matching system with a few other links in the post which contain more info about it.
