I’ve been replaying some ranked team slayer Halo 3 lately, with a rank of 36. I was reminded on how abrasive and angry teammates are to each other. They blame everything and everyone else except themselves. For example, this one game I played on guardian: 2 minutes in, I died twice and had one kill. The score was them 8 us 5. I get yelled at by this one teammate to quit out so that they can rank up. I ignore him and end up getting 14 kills 8 minutes in the game, double the amount he had. He then blames the other players for “having host”.
I get its frustrating when you have teammates who keep dying and make the other team win, but its another thing to yell and be an unsupportive team member. The games where this didn’t occur was when my teammates didn’t have mics or in social btb.
I think ranked playlists have an overall negative atmosphere and people who are too tense for a virtual number to appear next to their virtual name in a video game. They may claim that rank is “the only incentive for winning a game”, but this is a poor argument, as you don’t need rank to enjoy halo, such as halo ce on pc and xbox.
The incentive to win for halo, like most other multiplayer games, is to beat the other team. Halo being an arena shooter requires team work and map control. The people who want to accomplish this are can be considered a competitive crowd. Casuals can be defined as people who don’t care about winning and would play any gametype.
Removing rank doesn’t remove any incentive except for those people who play the game to get their own rank up, which in my opinion is playing more for bragging “rights” rather than playing the game for what it is. (I say rights on account of the multiple illegitimate 50s in halo 3.)
Edit: The point is, I see people claiming that in-game ranks are a necessity for Halo 5 to be enjoyable. The point of this post is mainly that this “argument” is wrong, that Halo 5 needs other gameplay elements to be enjoyable.
I agree all rank is, is a head game. Its only there so others can say they are better when all that truly matters is medals. Medals show your skill so what i think 343i should do instead of showing rank they should just put up the medal you have the most in lines or 3. Highest Quantity, Highest Streak and abnormal medals.
So instead of just having a number next to someones gamertag you will see what they are really capable of. This will be playlist restricted. So if a person got a killtrocity in grifball they can’t go parading around Team Slayer acting like a total boss.
I know i would be more fear full if in see a
(Headshot Medal with) x10k
Killionaire x 200
Perfectionist x 47
next to a persons gamertag than just just lvl 49 or Mythic.
I liked ranking up in Halo: Reach, because when I finally became an Inheritor, I would go into games with my other Inheritor friends and all the Warrant Officers were like, “Woah! They all have the Haunted Helmet! That’s so cool!” Being a high rank in Halo: Reach was amazing, because everyone respected you. But, that isn’t the case anymore. I don’t really care that I am an SR 130 in Halo 4, because it really didn’t take that much time to obtain it. So in general, I think there should be ranks in Halo 5, but they need to actually have names rather than “SR 130” and they should be higher and more difficult to achieve.
So, if you don’t like playing Ranked why not just stay in Social? Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean that it should be gotten rid of.
You don’t like the attitude of players in Ranked, and you don’t care about ranks, what’s so hard about just not playing Ranked then? I really don’t see the problem here.
There are a lot of PRO’s and CON’s for why we should have RANKS.
I think we need to have both Ranked and Social playlist. And I think your rank and other stats should be viewable from in game.
Your total K/D, your K/D for each playlist etc should also be visible.
The problem with RANKS and Stats that some players will cheat just to make their rank and stats look good. But if you have cheated or boosted, then your rank and stats mean crap, as you cheated or boosted to get them.

I mean to say that you don’t need rank to enjoy Halo. I see posts here all the time pushing for in-game ranks, claiming that its a priority for Halo 5, and if its not implemented, then those people feel that there’s no reason for them to play the next Halo.
Which is why my post is mainly addressing why I believe rank doesn’t need to be in Halo 5. The “shouldn’t be” part is more of a personal matter that shouldn’t be the main thing of what you take from my post.
I agree with Assassin 11D7. If they have Ranked/Social playlists then just play Social. I love ranked and just because some people cannot handle it doesn’t mean the people who can should be penalized.
I don’t think casual game types should be in the next Halo, I think it should be all competitive all the time.
Oh wait… That sounded stupid.
Lol, really, ranks play a very important role in games, if you don’t like them, don’t play them. We had a failed ranking system in Reach that tried to do away with the ‘1-50’ notion, it didn’t do so well and it was a pretty bad way to gauge player ability.
A 1-50 system is more efficient for both visual appeal and to gauge ability, especially if it has an added tier system.

This poster and the poster above me is correct.
OP, the Halo 3 ranking system was probably one of the best models ever created. It was both casual and competitive friendly, and we need that stuff back, and in addition, we need clan-based ladders or something to also promote clan-based progression.
I think the reason why ranks are important in this day and age—especially for the more competitive and hardcore players—is because games need to keep up with innovation and re-playability. Sure, Halo 1 didn’t have them, BUT the fact is the FPS genre evolved and one of its evolutions was the implementation of a ranking system. Back then the market wasn’t as big or as “demanding” as it is today.
Halo 3 did it the best with the ranking system, but there’s certainly ALWAYS room for improvement. Not only do higher ranks also give the player a sense of achievement, but adding certain armor unlocks and other additional customization options will be vital to keep the competitive and hardcore players drawn in and keep them preoccupied while the devs develop more for the game post-launch.
The gaming community and its demographics are growing and advancing, and it’s the job of the guys with the degrees making games to keep up with the needs/wants of its player-base and its competition.
I personally love the rage of ranked players. Nothing is more hilarious than someone blaming everything but themselves for a loss. Ranked brings something different to the table than an average social game. Just the fact that everyone is playing with a competitive mindset makes it unique.
Ranks and competitive play are important to Halo. However if you don’t want to play with the try hards, play social. That is the whole point of separating them.
Here is a video I made recently that I hope explains why competitive playing is so important to Halo’s future. I hope you take the time to look at it.

That’s not what my main point is, the point is you don’t need rank to enjoy Halo.
Balancing gameplay, they are designed to place players in a similar range of similar skill. Overtime, the better players should never be matched against weaker player. It is just a boring for a bad player to get stomped by a good player than a good player to have to play against a bad player.
Games should be evenly matched and a well designed ranking system will accomplish this. Hint. Hint… Halo 2 was the best of all the Halo games when it came to putting together balanced games, with all randoms or teams.
Ranks also give competitive players something to strive towards and to show their currently standings between friends and so forth. Sure, they are used as bragging rights but why shouldn’t they be?
Why did people play Halo:CE LANs? TO SEE WHO WAS BETTER BETWEEN FRIENDS!
Those that don’t care about ranks shouldn’t care what level they are. If they are stuck at 20, they’ll be playing against other 20s, so the trash talking should be very limited.
The first month or two should be all it takes to separate the majority into their categories.
I for one find it boring as all hell stomping kids in Halo. I want close games, 47-50TS, 3 to 2 CTF games and so on. This can only be accomplished by a good ranking system.

yea, but people need a reason to play. And rank seems to be a good reason for multiple people to play the game.

I watched the video, and I can say I addressed all your points already in my OP.
You’re pretty confident in your definition of casual and competitive players, which I feel is pretty inaccurate. Just because someone plays modes like flood/infection or gametypes that deviate from the traditional halo formula doesn’t mean they’re competitive about it.
As I stated in my op, competitive players are considered those who want to win. And just because the player plays in a non-ranked playlist in Halo 3 doesn’t mean they’re there to goof off. There are plenty of people who play using callouts and communication just as much as people would in ranked playlists, such as BTB in Halo 3. In Reach, only arena was the ranked playlist that best imitated Halo 3s system in the sense of a # showing next to your name. The other playlists had plenty of competitive atmosphere to them.
Its not like a scrimmage like you put it in your video, its the real deal, the incentive being winning the game itself, like I said in my op.
You claim that it’s “not fun” in playlists that don’t show rank, though the term fun is subjective, most players play to have fun by playing the game itself and beating the other team. (Written in my op).
Sure rank may give players the incentive to play more to get their number up, but as I said in my op, this just creates a negative atmosphere with a lot of scolding teammates. It also creates the incentive to cheat, which is how most 50’s were “earned” in Halo 3. People complained about this back in Halo 3’s prime on how it wasn’t fair that most 50’s were illegitimate, and earning their 50 the honest way took too long.

Trueskill is in every xbox live game, it accomplishes this without the number appearing next to your gamertag. Halo 3 used a version of trueskill to match you up with players of similar skill. Though the thing is, true skill matches you by the wins/loss ratio or something similar of the sort. Since playlists like team slayer level you up based on your team winning, there were many times players carried lower skilled players. Yes, there are many times too where its 4v4 with all players of similar skill, but this is accomplished too without ranks.
That’s what I mean, you play the game with the incentive to be better than the other team, not work your way up to a number. Halo CE on pc still has an active community today that shows how people play for the sake of the game, and not the rank.
