Random BR Spread

Randomness makes Halo 5 less skill based. Halo 5 is a skill based shooter. Please don’t add random spread to the Battle Rifle and Carbine. Don’t make Halo 5 less skill based.

Halo 5 is not a sim. There are other ways to make those two precision weapons less effective at long range, if that is so important.

Why should some precision weapons have random spread, and others not?

Random spread was unwelcome in Halo 3, and it is unwelcome in Halo 5.

Should of watched the stream , they haven’t added random spread now , just looking forward to seeing what it plays like tomorrow. But you are very correct the weapon tuning test BR was rubbish .

I’d say that RNG-based elements like bullet spread are not a good way to balance any weapon in a game where success is meant to be determined by skill. As you said, there are other ways to make weapons less effective past their intended range.

Examples:

  • appropriate red-reticle range - projectile travel time - bullet drop - damage drop-off - recoilHowever, it doesn’t look like random spread has been added with the update, so your concerns for the BR/Carbine should be alleviated.

Edit: spoke too soon

Randomness outside of intended range is not a bad thing. The problem with the tuning test was that the BR spread was too big; making it inconsistent and ranges where it shouldn’t be. The randomness of the spread didn’t have as much to do with it as the radius of it. They’ve toned down the spread radius, and that should help a lot, but also give the reduction in range that the BR really needs.

Red-reticle range is another way to do it, but reducing only it doesn’t nerf the range as much as you’s think. I know from my personal experience that I’ve cross-mapped people, and been cross-mapped, from outside red-reticle range. It happens on Truth all the time, and don’t get me started on BTB and Warzone.

Projectile bullets are something that would be awesome, but can’t be brought back without certainty that they won’t create the same kind of netcode issues that they have in Halo 3.

I don’t think that bullet drop is the way too go in Halo. Just wouldn’t feel right.

Damage drop off is the worst possible way to approach weapon balance. It doesn’t feel good in any game that it’s in, and would hurt the game more than a spread on a gun.

Recoil is the ideal way to go IMO. It gives higher skill players the ability to counter it for higher effectiveness, rewarding gun skill, and would do a good job fighting range. The problem with it though is that great players would be able to fight recoil enough make to make guns effective outside of their intended range. Not a great thing.

Ideally a combo of some of these seems like the way to go, and that’s what they’re doing. I watched the stream last night and almost everything seemed like a good change. The only one that I’m a little hesitant on is the frag change. The 50% shield damage minimum seems like a lot of damage. We’ll see though.
