Can we talk about the rainbow in the HXBO trailer? Forgive me if its been talked about but I dont seem to be able to find any discussion on it. Maybe I suck at using the search option. But Ill bring it up again anyway.
Observation: There is a faint and odd looking rainbow effect at the bottom of the screen in the HXBO trailer at 0:17. It has always struck me as an odd looking thing in the trailer and it only appears for a few seconds but it seems like it was more than just an artistic effect. Now notice how just before that, the sand is sparking at 0:09. The winds are somewhat still compared to when the cloak-wearing Chief appears and maybe its just me but at that moment, the sparkles in the sand kind of remind me of a night sky thats full of stars. This is where I start tripping off acid.
I recalled in my school days that a rainbow is a very mythological symbol in many different cultures. Of course, the most common one is probably the reference to Noah, the flood, and God’s promise. Key words: Flood & promise. (Yeah, I guess Noah’s Ark and Installation 00, aka, the ark could be mentioned here too). However, according to the wikipedia page (not the best source I know but its a rainbow…), it says “the rainbow was considered to be a path made by a messenger (Iris) between Earth and Heaven.” Remember how I said the stars looked like a night sky, or “the heavens?” Good. Now think, who lives in the heavens? the gods, right? Okay, now here is where it comes together.
In the Halo series, the Forerunners have been viewed as gods even throughout most of the Forerunner Saga. The Prophets viewed them as such, the Elites also viewed them as such, and while humans such as Dr. Halsey probably doesn’t view them as “gods,” they’re probably at the top of her tier in terms of life in the galaxy. Also, lets talk about that line from Spartan Ops when Doctor Halsey brings up Prometheus. She says that he “stole fire from the gods.” Now I know this is a stretch but bare with me here. Prometheans are ancient humans, right? And the Forerunners were viewed as gods, correct? I am going to go out on a limb (as if Im not already), and say that maybe quite possible that the fire could be a representation of “the Mantle.” Now I know ancient humanity didnt inherit the mantle because of the flood and the Didact pretty much ended that and whatever but they were well on their way. OR, maybe its current humanity stealing all of the Forerunners tech. The Didact did say that “we squander eons in the darkness while Humanity seize our triumphs for their own.” Either way, I’d say its pretty similar.
Ok, now back to the trailer. If the gods are forerunners and the rainbow a bridge, that would kind of imply that Chief is the messenger. He’s obviously walking a path to a forerunner thing, but maybe he’s not looking for Cortana, or Mendicant Bias. Maybe he’s about to encounter the Forerunner’s themselves with a message from Humanity. What’s this message? Who knows, but if you ask me, that Forerunner owl thing didn’t pop out until Chief got close. Maybe now his body is emitting some kind of signal that can be easily scanned. Maybe thats why hes been MIA for 7 months. Maybe ONI has been scanning him or keeping track of his “evolutionary progress.” Might explain why he’s been MIA for 7 months after the game and why a Forerunner machine pops out of the ground before him. Now I know that the whole Chief meeting Forerunners on the Ark theory kind of falls apart because they aren’t in the galaxy anymore, but the Ark does sit outside of the galaxy. Maybe now that the Didact is back, a trip to the Ark was in order?
TLDR: Meh, just another wild theory to pass the time until E3.
