Radar Size - Should we bring Back the 25m Range?

Personally, I feel like the 22m is still not enough, and I am very unhappy that it’ll only be larger in BTB. I think it’s as much, if not more, important in 4v4 social arena. Here’s my take on it…

Radar size is not just a “didn’t like it; felt too small” thing. It’s an accessibility issue. I have severe hearing problems, not to mention a noisy house, and that amounts to me not being able to hear most audio cues in the game, especially subtle ones like footsteps. The old radar, at 25m at minimum, allowed me to tell when someone was walking up behind me as easily as other players hear footsteps. Now, I find myself realizing there’s someone there too late, very often. A larger radar UI will help with this, but seriously, a 25m radar needs to come back. This is one of the reasons I always liked Halo over other games; in other games I have no idea what’s going on half the time. Halo has always allowed me to really play a type of game I couldn’t experience otherwise, and radar was a massive part of it. I really want to see them bring back the radar the way it used to be.

What does everyone else think?

I think 22m is fine so I’m not really bothered they lowered it by 3 meters.

The big thing for me is that the 18m range in the tech test just didn’t feel like 18 meters. It felt like people would get noticeably closer before actually popping up on the radar. I don’t know how the exact scaling works but as small as 18 meters felt I wouldn’t mind it going up to 22m for arena and 25m for BTB.

I think 18M is fine for arena so people can’t just camp in power positions and dominate and never be successfully flanked. On rechargebthere was that tower next to the gravity hammer spawn, and that place was very campy but a player wouldn’t see my on radar until it was too late if he was looking out the window and firing.

I feel like smaller radar doesn’t really help camping though; the issue is the serious players can get away without it. They just use nice headsets and have good enough hearing that they can hear the footsteps coming. I can’t do that, so it feels kind of exclusionary to me.

I don’t have any specific opinion about the radar range that should be used as I haven’t played the specific gametype and I do usually attempt to not be too reliant on the radar.

When it comes to 22 meter vs 25 meter, the difference shouldn’t play that big role other than radius is reduced by 12% and the area is reduced by approximately 23%.

yes, that would the best. Arena 22m, BTB 25m.

22m better than it was, although I would agree 22m arena 25m btb, might be a better consistency to have it same on both

Still think the radar is too small and mostly useless in arena. As for BTB I rarely needed to use it since in it’s current state it felt mostly broken due to little it helped and had to keep an eye on player movement more due to how useless it felt but in fairness I do that anyway with Halo games.

Though I think it’s pretty bad that it’s not going to be in ranked to cater only to the HCS gamers since ranked should cater to all skilled types of players instead of specific types.

I think post launch it could well change again to find a good balance, at least we know 343 listening so I’m not concerned

Yeah I do agree with that; that’s my hope as well.

Agreed at least for BTB.

I agree the range of the radar should be 25, it is very frustrating to not see your enemies on radar but they are shooting at you

25m was the standard from Halo CE to Reach and I support it being increased again.

I agree the radar range is way too small. I hardly even look at it now. There can be someone practically right next to you and they don’t show up on the radar.

I think they should get rid of radar altogether. The maps are so small and the spawning so ridiculous that you run into people way too often as is. It’s not fun being a magnet to everyone once you fire your gun. Halo was never about the footsteps and sound usage like other shooters anyways.

Yes it needs to be 25 in all game modes or its basically useless , ive played a hundred matches since november 15th and its noticeably bad. i wouldnt be on here otherwise. Also i dont know how they calculate meters but the radar in arena for bazaar is no more than 15 maximum.

Agree…radar is trash and useless. It usually is bad in the 343 halo games though.

Yeah I don’t know if the meters are even the same as they used to be. The 18m feels like less than it was in any other game by far, not just a difference of 7 meters. I think in older games, there was a 25m range where you could see the actual dots and exact position, but you could see a blip along the outline of the radar even further out, and that made the radar feels much more effective as a warning that someone was coming.

Yeah they haven’t done as good of a job with it as Bungie did, I don’t think. I’m not sure why they insist on making it worse, though; competitive already has no radar so shouldn’t those players be satisfied already? They have an option if they like dislike radar.

Seems to me the majority of the community wants the radar back to how it was in Reach, where it was full-sized and showed you players above or below you. I still don’t know why 343 has refused to go back to that, since it seems to be the fan favorite.
