The radar might as well not even be in the game. One of the things I liked about Halo was its useful radar, Ive come to rely heavily on it and decreasing its usefulness while increasing spartan movement speed has shown 343s inability to offer an experience that feels like Halo. Useful radars ARE Halo, its one of the things thats set it apart from the other shooters, awareness on the battlefield offers time to strategize and coordinate better. Its a damn shame they decided to “fix” what was already so flawless before.
InB4 thread deletion. the mods keep deleting threads on this topic for no particular reason. They refuse to bring it to attention.
Wasnt original radar 25m and this new one 18? Cant be that much difference
Just mt two cents, I love the new radar.
If you design a game to be fast paced and competitive, give the Spartans abilities like dash, clamber, and spartan charge, you have to make it so campers don’t just sit in a corner watching their radar.
Imo, the radar size is perfect. Large enough be useful, but not so large you can see everything going on around you.
I think it helps reinforces and supports players who use their eyes, ears, and teammates to know what’s going on.
I’m not upset that someone can run up and assassinate me. If I’m camping a room, I know better than to expect people won’t want their revenge.

it’s a HUGE difference, especially on those small maps
My problem is the differing sizes.
In Arena it’s 18m, in Warzone it’s 25m.
It’s always been 25m and that’s the best size for it.
I agree it’s useless. I look at it occasionally in the hopes that it might be of use but it rarely is.
I agree, its utterly useless as of right now
Here we go again…
It’s useful
At some point you gotta take off the training wheels.
We know.

I agree with you 100%. Anybody who says Radar is a crutch is missing the point entirely. “Useful radars ARE Halo”. Anybody who has ever played Halo from the beginning understands that the radar is a huge part of the game, and learned how to be good at using it. Radar has always been an intrinsic part of the Halo experience. Knowing that there is an enemy around the corner or coming up behind you is vital for your survival. And I stress survival. The radar doesn’t help you kill the enemy, only a good aim and strategic placement of grenades will kill. One of the things that frustrates me constantly is being shot at without knowing where it’s coming from. When this happens, I’m pretty much dead. This death isn’t because I suck or because I was careless about where I was on the map or where I was looking. It’s likely because an enemy spawned behind me and I had no way of knowing they would just pop into existence right at that moment, or they snuck by me an AR’s distance away out of my line of sight. Map awareness always has been and always will be vital to Halo. Shrinking the radar while enhancing spartan mobility makes knowing what going on around you nearly impossible. The result is constantly being flanked and constantly being killed before you even know what hit you. The radar is meant to enhance awareness. The inclusion of level indicators on the radar was a huge step forward. The removal of this indicator in Halo 5 is a huge step backwards. Trying to defend the Garage is a perfect example of this. I can be in the garage and see a swarm of red dots, but have absolutely no clue which ones are relevant to me. Shrinking the dots for off level players is stupid, because the difference is so tiny that I simply can’t spot the difference at a glance. Removing meaningful level indicators, shrinking the radar, while enhancing Spartan mobility makes Halo 5 feel less like any previous Halo game ever. Players that actually like the nearly useless radar were probably terrible at using it in the first place, allowing them to get kills they otherwise never would have achieved. It’s hard to hate something that makes your inattentive play style feel like skill.
I agree with this post, there is a BIG difference compared to the reliable radars in Halo 3 and the suspect radars in Halo 5

Original as in older Halo games? If yes then the game-changer is unlimited sprint and Spartan charge. Especially a combo of those two in certain maps makes Sprinting & charges through closed spaces and corners a VERY effective strategy. And a strategy VERY hard to counter due to so small radar radius. And at the very best you stay alive hoping you won’t get randomly headshot by some dude across the room or something.
My total honesty? The range of the radar sucks. If you don’t have a good range on a radar, then you’ll keep getting assassinated all the time.
Radar range definitely needs to be expanded to at least 25m.
In it’s current state you have no idea an enemy is close until they are on top of you. I get what they were trying to do with more engagement but I think it’s failing.
Personally I do like the new radar, but then again I agree it is too small. Here’s the thing. In the Beta, it was 30m and it was a bit too big, so the cut it a bit too much in size.
HOWEVER.
The radar is far from useless still. While you sometimes are engaged with someone that is outside your motion tracker range, if you didn’t check that corner or aren’t in a place where you can get out of the combat then you’ve already messed up and are prime meat to be BRed to death. And they’ve set up the radar in different game modes with different sizes. In Warzone I actually think it’s 40m, in BTB it’s 25m, and Arena it’s 18m, and in Breakout it’s completely absent. It’s adapted to each game mode.
My conclusion from reading these responses and thinking about it is that while the radar has been reduced in usefulness, remember that it still has the potential to save your life or whoever is using it against you.
Motion tracker increases AND decreases the skill gap depending upon your skill level and whether or not you’re on a team.
Short tracker range is fine if you’re using a lower skill weapon like scattershot or shotgun. Then you can listen for the enemy and see when they’re within assassination distance.
The larger tracking distance increases the skill gap in more casual games because its a tool that an advanced player can leverage to prepare, prioritize, react to and track what’s going on 360 degrees around. You can decide when to fight, escape or flank based on your skill, map knowledge and awareness. It allows tactics, which is inherrently skewed towards advanced players.
No radar in casual games decreases the skill gap because it favors reckless players who sprint everywhere and mash the melee button to do 4 shots of damage when you surprised them and got several shots on them. In high level games, no radar increases skill gap because superior teams have outstanding communication and make consistent, accurate callouts. 343 supported my assertions when they explained changes they made since the beta. Advanced players used it too much, less skilled players didn’t use it.
The radar is still useful because it shows the direction of my teammates and I can determine my enemies location by sound. I actually missed it during snipers this weekend because I always had to visually check players to see if they are friend or foe because everyone sprints constantly and sounds the same.

It was 30m I believe in the beta 25m in ALL PAST HALO games. I play alot of warzone were the range is much bigger and the radar is a lot more useful. Then when I play arena there is a obvious difference in range witch make the radar almost completely useless in arena and could just be removed.
THIS 18m RADAR RANGE IS MY ONE AND ONLY GRIPPE WITH HALO 5 WHY DID 343i fudge this up!
Check this out the one and only time my radar was useful in arena…
