Radar. Can someone explain how it works.

So i recently started playing Halo 5 again. I grew up on Halo and it is one of my favorite series ever. However i noticed the radar is not the same as it was in Halo 4. Can someone explain how exactly the radar works. I remember in Halo 3 and even in Halo 4 the radar would only make someone not visible when they were crouched. i also notice the radar in slayer has gone from 25m to 18m which is just plain odd to me. I want to use the radar but it seems kind of useless.

In every playlist minus the HCS, the radar works like how it used to in Halo 1-3 if I recall right but it’s 18m and not 25m, your right.

In the HSC playlist, you only show up on radar if you use a Spartan ability aka sprint, ground pound, thrust etc. And if I recall (been a while since I’ve played it) the radar is 25m in that playlist.

The radar has been a topic of much debate in Halo 5. Some people like how it is now, some want it like how it is now but 25 meters, some want it like the HSC style and some have no idea what they like/want lol

The radar has been significantly reduced. Silenced weapons will hide you from the radar, walking slowly will. Also you’ll almost never see anybody until they’re super close.

Well the radar in H5 varies on its usefulness… What really seems to be the effectiveness of the current radar is vastly reliant on how well the servers are. H5 seems to have variations to that when it comes to performance. Vastly variations. The whole function of this game revolves around the servers performance. And the radar falls in that category. How quickly one can react to a last second move varies. So what I would suggest is keep an eye on it but don’t rely on it… That’s about it really. There has been a lot of talk about this already but that’s about where it ends.

Okay cool, so if i got this right. It only pick up on movement if someone is sprinting or using a spartan ability? And they wont show up if they are walking normal? What about if someone is shooting a non silenced weapon? Will they pop on radar? I don’t necessarily rely on it but it is or can be useful when trying to flank enemies.

What you described only happens in the HCS playlist. And yes, when shooting a non-silenced weapon, you show up.

For everywhere else in Halo 5, the radar works like previous Halos: you show on radar unless you are crouching, stationary, or shooting a silenced weapon.

Radar in Halo 5, like sprint in Halo 5, has been hobbled to the point of uselessness. For a lot of sweaty players the Halo sweet spot was H3 MLG settings - 3 never had sprint, and MLG settings turned off motion tracker. So, in order to make H5 as hyper-competitive and sweaty as possible, they dumbed down sprint and MT, though not removing them completely, and thus pleasing absolutely no one, sweat or casual. This is what you’ve noticed.

oh god the sprint in halo 5 has been talked to death literally there was even a post removing spring will make halo great again so please do not bring sprint to compare to radar -Yoinking- please.

Sorry, didn’t mean to touch a nerve. I only meant to observe how strange it is that 343 wants so badly to make H5 extremely compeitive, virtually guts sprint and motion tracker in terms of effectiveness, and yet in the end they still can’t manage to completely pull the plug on either one. It’s an incredibly mixed message, both funny and sad no matter which side of the divide you happen to be on. Especially when you consider them in light of newer mechanics like pound and charge, as casual-friendly a group of silliness as I can imagine, yet they’re full frontal Halo 5, despite being the weapon of choice for noobs, because a game without novelty won’t hold the attention of thirteen year old kids. This game is a mass of irony and contradiction.

If you move at “walking” speed, you will show up on the radar. Crouching, shooting a silenced weapon, and standing still will make you invisible to an enemy’s radar. Also, you can press up on the d-pad and you will activate a beacon that your team will see.

But it manages to be fun as heck once you find your style. I’d say mission accomplished.

With people often choosing to aim with the smartlink through every engagement (a hard habit to break even in a halo game), this makes the radar situation a lot more redundant. All it takes is aiming for 2 seconds to not notice someone on the radar flanking or about to assassinate you.

When you put it that way it sounds like the guy who invented smart link wasn’t very smart.

Is this true? If you walk nobody sees you on the radar? Also in normal playlists?

Sometimes it shows the enemy when he already killed you.

it will activate if you run, shoot, or any type of movement

Alright, how radar works is like this

Radar has sonar bleep thingy that detects enemy movement from the air, ground, but crouching you can’t appear
Will also detect any gunfire from its targeting range, but with suppressor attachment you’re a Ghost

But there’s a radar that detects spartan ability’s such as ground Pound and Spart…sorry threw up in my mouth a little, and that’s all I know about that one

You have had some great explanations so far, but just in case you are a visual learner as well…RyaNoob Tips: Radar Mechanics.

Yes, this video is about a year old, but I remember he had this and thought it might help understanding. Plus, he has some good tips in other videos as well.

Far as I’m aware that’s only in the HCS playlist, if it is in the normal playlists then I don’t notice it cause no one ever uses BMS(walk), they like to high tail it across the map.

… IT DOESN’T.

It’s completely broken and useless. Good luck getting frustrated over and over.
