Race?

I want to smoke people with my beasty drifting! Are they gonna ever add that gametype or do we have to go to the custom games that no one plays?

At this point, I don’t think they’re going to add any gametypes that were removed from previous games. It’s been 6 months, and they haven’t added a single one back, so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

I sadly agree with Sensory. Not sure if you are aware but there is a reasonable substitute called RACETRACKS. See my file share for the gametype along with several Mario Kart remakes that are also compatible. Here’s a link to my map posts:

HaloTracks.org has a few hundred compatible tracks if you want more.

Race was boring and annoying

> Race was boring and annoying

it’s because you suck at it

Nice opinion.

I’ve always felt that Assault was both boring and annoying.
Same with Multi-Flag CTF, MLG gametypes, SWAT and SWAT-based Slayer variants, and Oddball.
Not because I suck at them (I do suck at all of them other than SWAT and Oddball), but because I find them to be boring and annoying.

I’ve also always felt that the entirety of Matchmaking was the most horrifyingly boring, stale experience in the series other than trying to play Fat Kid on a one-sided map.

OP, Race isn’t coming back any time soon.
Your only option is to play stupid and probably modded workarounds on KOTH.

How anyone could say a racing type game would be boring is beyond me, its meant for FUN! you know that thing games are for? It’s meant to be used for taking a break from the stressful matchmaking and just do something chill, Halo 4 doesn’t have any gametypes like that. (If they do then please tell me)

There aren’t any.

Which is why Bungie noticed how popular the gametype was in Halo 3 and then overhauled it as a true, legit gametype in Reach?

Man, facts are inconvenient aren’t they?

Yeah, it’s sad. I loved race. And one of my friends from school made a really cool race map on Halo Reach. It was his first work and it turned out great, it was a race track that spanned the entirety of Forge World.

Thats beasty! I really wanted someone to do that in reach I just never got the opportunity lol

Although Halo 4’s improved gametype engine should allow 343i to add new gametypes (including Race) at any time, they have literally only ever used it to produce two minor updates to existing gametypes. Though I do not have any inside knowledge on the subject, I suspect that 343i hasn’t tasked enough expert scripters to maintain Halo 4. (Maybe they haven’t tasked any expert scripters to Halo 4.) Either way, at this time we’re not likely to see Race – or any other lost gametypes – return in Halo 4. :frowning:

To my knowledge, they aren’t. I would not recommend attempting to discuss such things in further detail.

That scares me.

I worded that poorly (hence my edit).

I’m sure they have enough people maintaining Halo 4 to keep the game functional, keep Matchmaking content fresh, and fix problems as they arise. However, I don’t think a significant portion of those people are familiar with Megalo. If they were, then a lot more would have been done with Megalo by now.

A disadvantage of hiring people from different studios who specified in different genres perhaps? Isn’t someone at 343i from the Forza team? Not to discount their talent in racing games, but what does that bring to Halo?

Explain Please?

Wish they brought that hog from the forza video lol

One would’ve thought it would’ve brought better race mechanics, but y’know…

This but Mostly because you had to have GREAT maps to play on as well, it wasnt race gametypes fault, but the limited forgers who would actually add things like shortcuts, style , smooth layout, and/or terrain.

Megalo is the gametype scripting engine that was introduced in Halo Reach and improved in Halo 4.

Basically, in Halo 3, a game variant – something you’d put on your File Share – was just a list of settings. The code for the gametypes themselves – Slayer, Infection, what have you – was built right into the game engine.

Megalo changed that. In Halo: Reach and Halo 4, a game variant isn’t just a list of settings. It also contains an entire separate, independent copy of the gametype code itself. This means that Bungie and 343i could release bugfixes or even entire new gametypes without a Title Update, and without modifying the base game. They can just take any old game variant, change the script code inside, and toss it into Matchmaking. You can then play it in Matchmaking, save it from your Temporary History, and edit it as you desire.

In Reach, the following gametypes and spin-offs were enhanced or notably created from scratch in this way:

3-Flag Slayer
Grifball
HaloBall
Infection (Alpha Zombies added)
Invasion Skirmish
Power Slayer
Rocket Race
Speedflag
Speedpile
Team Hotshot

You might be wondering, then, why 343i couldn’t just reuse the Reach-era scripts in Halo 4. They’ve never officially stated why, but we can tell that they made several enhancements to Megalo in Halo 4. Chances are, these changes made the old scripts incompatible, so 343i had to re-script every gametype from scratch. It seems they ran out of time.
