Race has recently been added to Halo: 5 which is great. But i’m a little disappointed to see that it’s only one game type of race. I was hoping and looking forward to play Rocket Race again, as it’s my favorite Race Game type. The most action-filled one.
It may be possible to create it in forge. I haven’t been able to test everything i wanna test yet, as i am alone at the moment. Gonna be looking into it more next weekend with my buddy. But from what I’ve seen from trying solo, it doesn’t seem like it’s possible.
Here is what Rocket Race requires:
*A team of 2-3. (Depending on if it’s Warthog, or Mongoose)
*Player and vehicle needs to not die/break in 1 rocket. (Can be fixed by lowering the damage of the player)
*Spawning in a Warthog/Mongoose. (Can be done in the game mode settings)
*Goals which gives you 1 point when you drive through it. It’s possible, but only problem is that in the current race game type, it doesn’t disappear after someone reaches the goal.
*Spawning weapons, Rocket Launcher (SPNKR) and Grenade Launcher (Reach)
*If you die you’re suppose to respawn inside the vehicle. This can not be done perfectly. But it is possible to an extent. Instead of spawning inside the vehicle. You can spawn right next the vehicle. By grouping a spawn boundary to the vehicle. Of course this means that you can not rely on the ‘‘Spawning in vehicle setting’’ when creating a game type. You would have to place the vehicle on the map. Though i am not sure what happens if the vehicle gets destroyed. Would the spawn boundary get destroyed too? Or does it stay where the vehicle wreckage is? If so that is a big problem. As then you would spawn in the middle of the map with no vehicle. And then you would have to walk all the way back to your spawn where your vehicle is waiting for you.
But i guess a way to work around this, would be to make the vehicles indestructible. But that ruins the whole idea of Rocket Race to the point where it’s not even Rocket Race anymore. So really the only way i see myself playing Rocket Race again, is for 343 to fix it. Add some supporting aspects for it in forge, and in the game mode settings. As there is really nothing in the game mode settings that is referring to race. Not even in forge either. In Halo: Reach I’m pretty sure you had premade boundaries you could place that was made specifically for race game modes. Basically the same deal as with the flag capture point, and Stronghold objects you can place in forge.
Anyway. I think Rocket Race would be really fun in Halo: 5 with the Rocket Mongoose.

I never got the chance to play the Halo 3 version. Halo Reach is where I really started kicking in with Teams and communicating with them. I had a blast. Hemorrhage. I had so much fun on that map.
I’m just happy we finally got a Race gametype in the game. It would be cool to have Rocket Race even if it takes some time as long as it’s not a year later.
I assumed it would be possible for someone to make rocket race now that the race gametype exists, and with all the new triggers they added. Kinda disappointing that it sounds like there are so many things still missing. I have a rocket race gametype bookmarked that I found, but I don’t have any maps to use it with to test. It just says “use with rocket race maps”, but I can’t find any of those.
Rocket Hog Race, Rocket Race, and Splocket Race are 3 of my favorite Halo modes ever. I logged countless hours in Reach playing RHR on Hemmorage. So much fun.
Also, doesn’t Rocket Race use the KotH gametype, rather than race? Can you set a capture zone with an instantaneous capture time? If anyone is working on this and wants someone to help test, hit me up on XBL. I have no forge skill, so I probably can’t help much in actually implementing it.

Is anyone in the community making it though? This post makes it sound like there are still unresolved issues that prevent it from happening. I don’t know enough about Forge to say one way or the other.

Rockethog race was the worst gameplay I ever played. The warthog always flipped unexpected ways and it was impossible to control, that made me crazy.
Even in the hog race in halo 5, the warthogs still flip for no reason, as if we were in another universe where the law of physics are completely different…

The warthogs do have slightly weird physics, but they are predictable once you learn them… unless you are being hammered by rockets of course. That said, I know this game mode is not everyone’s favorite, but I just want to find out how to play it in customs because there definitely are a lot of people who really like it.
Getting back to the OP points about what can and can’t be done. You can’t make this by just editing the race gametype. It’s going to need maps that are configured for rocket hog race.
You can make the vehicles indestructible. The race gametype supports spawning/respawning in vehicle, and you can set the occupancy to 3, and the vehicles per team to 1, so that should always make people respawn in the vehicle. The old version of RHR would teleport you back into your hog after you’d been out for 2-3 seconds, not sure if that is still possible. But it should be able to be a global kill zone with an instant respawn. You want to give people 3 seconds to be out of the vehicle without dying though, so they can change drivers.

Hah! Yeah. So true. Although I’m starting to wonder if there will actually be an ‘‘eventually’’
As Halo: 5 Forge for PC has been broken for almost 5 months now. And they haven’t said anything about it. Though i don’t know if it’s 343i or Microsoft who is in charge of Halo on PC. But either way. 343i are the developers for Halo. So naturally the heat will go towards them.
