Does anyone know the race diversity in the Spartan Programs?
I don’t know, a lot?
There are only humans in the Spartan program.
I’m all for racial diversity, but not shoving an agenda down our throats. Locke I’m hoping is an interesting character who happens to be black, not a black new lead character to fill a criteria.
Ethnicity is not dived into much, but many of the S-II’s have names suggesting there is diversity.
There’s definitely variety in the few S-III’s we’ve seen. The S-IV’s seem to be mostly just black or white, though Tanaka clearly is part Japanese to some extent.

Exactly
Though I am very happy to see more diversity in the Spartan ranks.

You mean like an agenda that’s promoting poorly represented groups in media? Sounds awful. I don’t think you realize how difficult it still is for creators to get their publishers on board with a product that centers black people, women, queer people*,* or any other marginalized persons. For a name like Halo to encourage diversity and representation in an industry that has been so dominated by white men is awesome regardless if there’s a reason for it or not.
Jameson Locke, a black man, not only stars alongside the Master Chief in Halo 5: Guardians but is also featured on the standard edition cover. That’s a big deal when you consider that absolutely no one else, whether it be the Arbiter or even Cortana, has accompanied the Master Chief on a game cover before now.
Was it necessary in the grand scheme of the universe to make Miranda Keyes a woman? Probably not. Did Felicia Sanderson need to be a -Yoink!-? Nope. Does Jameson Locke need to have a reason to be a black man? H-e-double hockey sticks to the no he does not. People are who they are. Representation and diversity does not hinge on there being an in-universe reason for it to happen. We can stop being nerds for a little bit to understand that. Check this link out.
Just came from the Archive to see someone get dunked on…GG

WHO CARES? THEIR HUMANS!!!
I really don’t see the need for this… I don’t care if Locke is black… I don’t care if Tanaka is black… i don’t care if John is white. i just want to have good fulfilling characters, a great story, and have fun playing halo.
In my opinion its the people making a big deal that their are black or no black characters in games that are the issue. MLK wanted us not see “black people” getting in stardom positions nor did he want to see “White people” getting into stardom potions… he just wanted us to see PEOPLE getting into stardom positions. The whole point is that “skin color” should not even be a factor into perception. Its like separating cows based on fur color… No freaking reason too.
Although I admit 343 is probably very intentionally putting “less represented” races and sexes into the game. I have no issue with this… but i would be being untruthful if i said i did not agree with there intent. If you put these “types” into the game sorely to make them “represented” and make them “paragons” (Locke) It will devalue and sterilize the character if you put them in for that specific purpose.
to me (at least) Locke and some of the newer charcters feel kinda forced… Like thire trying to get us to like all the “minority” charcters by having them essentialy “goody good guys/gals” or “tough guys/gals”. I never felt that way with say… Johnson… Johnson was AWESOME, and I never once even thought “minority”. But with almost all the other characters… it feels really really forced… Like Palmar… She’s a kick butt female spartan commander… But at the same time… she feels… forced… Like 343 is putting in out faces that she’s AWESOME AND ETHICAL (cares about her soldiers) AND KICK BUTT. But with say… Kelly… I never felt that way… Kelly has done like 40000 times more then Palmar that’s a lot more impressive, but she’s never felt forced. I hope you all understand what I mean,
From what we’ve seen, the Spartans-IVs are predominantly black or white. Although I think Palmer might have originally intended to be Asian? Tanaka may also be intended to have Asian ancestry given her name.
Not that it really matters. Their skin colour has no reflection on their training and combat skills.
I wish people would would look past others for their race and see them for what they are: people with unique personalities that aren’t defined by their skin colour.
By the way, I’ll be in the bomb shelter over there since these ‘representation’ threads become flame wars and are subsequently locked fairly quickly. See you!
I want to know why we don’t see more mixed humans 500 years into the future.
Honestly I feel like the only gen where race would really be an issue is the S-II’s, mostly because all the ‘super kids’ being a particular ethnicity seems kind of supremist. But we already have plenty S-II names that suggest this isn’t the case, and it’s entirely possible to have more ‘western’ names used by other cultures.

It’s one of those weird things in sci-fi that helps us associate with people more.
I think people are taking this post the wrong way. I just notice that with each generation of Spartans, more races appear. I’m not saying “oh they’re not enough black Spartans so add more.” type of deal.
There’s also a point to be made that people tend to assume a character is white unless specifically mentioned otherwise. A lot of the Spartans are never described in enough detail to discern their ethnicity, so it’s just as possible a lot of them are not white.
That said, 500 years into the future it’s unlikely that anyone will be 100% white or black, even those who might look like they are. There’ll have been a lot of mixing going on over the centuries unless people have been living in isolationist enclaves to maintain their so-called “racial purity”.

There was a marine to left of Chief on the original CE cover. Also, let us take a look at the other Halo games that do not star Chief. There are five. Halo Wars features Red Team on its cover. Red Team features Alice, a woman. Halo Reach features Noble Team on its cover. Noble Team includes Kat, a woman, and Emile, a black man. Halo SA features Sarah Palmer, a woman, on its cover. Three out of five is not bad, unless I am not remembering other games besides ODST and SS. I think you should also look at the Gears of War covers. For a big name like GoW, they sure do not have a problem with racial and gender diversity.
Also, to Dragoth2000, how in the -Yoink!- is Locke or his team forced? The only thing we know is that he is black and that one Spartan on his team is a female. THAT IS IT!!! Did he say “All hail the conquering hero… I am a black guy BTW.” , because that would seem pretty forceful. I could understand that, but he said no such thing.
I also know a friend in real life who says his favorite characters are Emile and Locke. That would not be bad if his reason was not because they are black. I am dead serious.
I’m all for race diversity.
24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, Rolex 24 Hours, Spa 24 Hours, Monaco Grand Prix, Petit Le Mans… they’re ALL awesome!

Locke’s team is not really forced,… What I mean is 343 seems to really be trying to force the impression that Locke is a great guy… I really don’t like “paragon” people that developers attempt to get people to like purely by making them seem faultless/tough/empathic with no flaws. Hopefully halo 5 will clear this up.
I could also be fully wrong. I can’t get in their heads and I honestly don’t have the right to make some of these impressions… but keep in mind its simply my OPINION. I could very well be fully wrong.
