While I wouldn’t lay claims of being an expert what is Halo, unlike many a Halo fanboy, I can honestly say, Halo 4 is to me, a total departure from Halo. Having received one of our copies we ordered yesterday, my wife & I fired up the game, to find a game that neither of us could say felt like Halo.
The guns don’t have their signature sounds & burn through ammo too quickly. The graphics in general seemed not quite right, disjointed from the previous games. Any trolls that respond with something about the cut-scenes, realise cut-scenes aren’t gameplay & you’re missing my point, it doesn’t mesh with the look of previous titles, updated graphics or not. We ended our campaign play after just a few levels, unable to reconcile this with Halo, Halo 3, Reach or even ODST. The look, the feel, the sound, like a bad Halo clone… Not my words, the words of one of our friends who came over to see the game, all three, yet to collect their copies, now likely to cancel.
As for multi-player, I don’t play COD, I was a fan of Halo’s brand of multi-player gaming, my wife also enjoyed what Halo had to offer. She was recently asked to jump in on a game of Black Ops at a friend’s place during a party, while not a fan, she became more familiar with the COD franchise (she has played a few games with them a couple of times since). When we fired up Infinity & looked through everything, her first words to me were; “You are going to hate this, aren’t you? They’ve CODified Halo…” Indeed, I did, indeed, 343i have, right down to a control scheme that will allow COD players to jump right in, mirroring the set-up my wife used at our friend’s place.
I’m not going to demand 343i ‘fix’ the game, it works fine for what it is, an attempt to regain players lost to the COD franchise & put it back at the top of the FPS genre. I just wanted to make 343i aware of my personal disappointment, to stand up & be counted, so to speak. We’ve already contacted the company we purchased my LE copy from, I’ll be be shipping it straight back for full refund as soon as it arrives. That leaves us with the copy my wife ordered, which she’s thinking she might use as a trade-in for Black Ops 2.
The 6th of November 2012, will be for me, the day Halo died.
Oh well, back to Reach & Halo 3…
