Quick tip for your ranked grind!

Like the Topic says this is a tip!

STOP TELLING YOURSELF YOU LOSS BECAUSE THE OTHER TEAM OUT RANKS YOU/YOURS!

Ladies and gentlemen,

This is Halo you’re supposed to get placed against more and more challenging opponents in ranked. It’s ranked play every game isn’t going to be a cake walk (yes, some are🤣 nobody said the system was perfect) and it certainly wouldn’t entertain you longer than a day if you won every game you played. This is what makes Halo fun! It’s an arena shooter.

I wanna add that even an Onyx player can have a bad game. Some times we have bad games. Don’t berate your teammates when you lose, instead think about what went wrong and how you can do better next time💪🏽

Good luck out there🤞🏽

Being ‘Onyx’ is quite an accomplishment, kudos to you. I could never pass ‘Diamond I’ solo, but that’s because I’m where I need to be.

I’ve played over 200 ranked games around ‘Plat VI-Diamond I’ solo (in the solo/duo controller queue). What I can tell you is that my games (after 200 ranked matches) feel no more balanced than they did when I played my first ten ‘unranked’ matches, they’re wild, mostly wild. I see unranked players literally every other match on either team that do absurdly well or absurdly bad. I really get what you’re saying, but I would feel more comfortable with a ‘true solo queue’, so many low ‘Silver/Golds’ in games with high ‘Plat/Diamond/Onyx’ players are throwing the balance way off. What those games with a high variance in ranks means is that one player is going to dominate 2/3rds of each team to compensate for the wild swings in ‘SBMM.’

Like, I’ll do good against most of the opponents on the enemy team, but there will be that one player who will just manhandle me and two of my other random teammates (we’ll have a third teammate on our team comparable to him if we’re lucky), and those games are not fun. The two best players on each team (usually high ‘Diamond/Onyx’) just duke it out while the rest of us look stupid. :joy:

I see what you’re saying similar things happen to me in Onyx and even in my games I see platinum players some times. There’s almost always one or 2 players that don’t seem to belong in the lobby.

I’ve got 263 matches played (well 13 dnf on halo tracker not sure what this means) and I’d say 65ish percent of my games seem pretty well balanced. Which is pretty good in my opinion. I’d like it more in the range of 75-80% balanced matches. But then again I enjoy playing against players that are good as or better than me.

To be honest my games feel pretty balanced, I think it’s the inconsistency caused by hidden MMR that bothers people.

I’m D6 and sometimes outplay Onyx players and sometimes get stomped by D4 players - all due to the hidden MMR. It doesn’t really matter, but it does mean that the visible rank is a bit all over the shop and there are players either losing every round and not going down in rank, or players constantly winning and getting nowhere.

The latter is particularly true because of the D1 placement cap. Someone who is Onyx standard but gets placed into D1 is going to have a frustrating time because they’ll be put in Onyx matches anyway due to the MMR.

DNF = Did Not Finish, so you either quit or crashed.

Thank you lol the info

I placed D1 and made it to Onyx it was pretty chill

@Feeling_Wood My games sometimes feel comically imbalanced.

Take a look at my final game last night.

Okay, so the enemy team is ‘Gold 3’, unrated, ‘Gold 3’, ‘Plat 3’ in solo/duo controller.

My team is ‘Plat 6’ (me), unrated, ‘Plat 5’, ‘Plat 5’ in solo/duo controller.

We lost 171/250 in ‘Strongholds.’

I went back and looked at the enemy team’s ratings in crossplay, much different.

The ‘Gold 3’ in solo/duo controller is a ‘Diamond 2’ in crossplay.
The unrated in solo/duo controller is a ‘Plat 1’ in crossplay.
The ‘Platinum 3’ in solo/duo controller is a ‘Diamond 2’ in crossplay.
The other ‘Gold 3’ in solo/duo controller is a ‘Diamond 3’ in crossplay.

Now we’ll look at my team.

I’m ‘Plat 6’ in solo/duo controller and crossplay (so my rank is the same in both modes)
The unrated in solo/duo controller is a ‘Diamond 2’ in crossplay.
The ‘Platinum 5’ in solo/duo controller is a ‘Diamond 4’ in crossplay.
The other ‘Platinum 5’ in solo/duo controller is unrated in crossplay.

As you can see, this is wildly inconsistent, I’m the only one in the entire match who is at the same rank in multiple ranked modes. Everyone else is much different. I know there is hidden ‘true skill MMR’ or whatever, but I was technically one of the lowest ranked players in the match, and no matter how hard I tried, the game wasn’t going to be decided by my performance. I was getting stomped by the ‘Plat 1’ who was really a ‘Diamond 2.’ Every time I ran across him he shut me down. He went 35-18. I ended up losing a huge chunk of ‘MMR’ for getting defeated by ‘Gold’ players, but they weren’t actually ‘Gold’ players, they were ‘Diamond 2/3’ players. I lost an entire days worth of ‘MMR’ that I grinded in one game. Now tell me, how is that fair? I don’t think it is! Just one of their ‘Diamond 2’ ('Plat 3 'in solo/duo) players vastly outperformed our ‘Diamond 4’ ('Plat 5 in solo/duo) player (‘4,900’ personal score vs ‘3,400’). For comparison’s sake, my personal score was ‘3,075’ in that match.

Don’t forget that some players that should be Onyx may have only played a few ranked games so are still on their grind. That’s one of the issues with the max placement being D1…and it would be a much worse experience for the lower skilled players if everyone started in Bronze (as I’ve seen some suggest on here).

I guess that last suggestion is more in line with the 1-50 ranking system of the Bungie games, which I think has it’s merits. But yes, whilst players work through those lower levels, the players who would settle there would have a pretty awful time getting steamrolled a lot - especially as people can make as many accounts as they want to just keep battering low-level players.

I’d personally raise the placement cap to D3 - doesn’t sound like a big change but would make a difference I think. Notwithstanding the fact that the hidden MMR is doing all the work anyway, it would at least change people’s perception of fairness in some circumstances.

That one is awful, clearly - I think in particular unranked players really seem to mess with the system. It’s far too easy to launch a smurf account, run with a load of Diamond players

On the disparity between Crossplay and controller ranks, I have noticed that Crossplay is easier to rank in, but I haven’t seen disparity like you have in your game. I have 3 levels between my two ranks, whereas those in your game are way worse than that. Unfortunately I think it’s probably people just throwing games to get easier matches - all the while the game is F2P and people can make loads of accounts, I don’t think any system gets rid of that.

@Feeling_Wood I appreciate you acknowledging my post! As a ‘Plat VI’ player, I get games like that all day long filled to the brim with ‘unrated’ players in almost every match. Too many ‘stomps’ and unbalanced matches for my taste.

It is very tiresome, the ‘unrated’ players are either really good or really bad. The system likes to put me in tons of matches with new players or fresh accounts when deciding their rank because I’m a ‘safe bet’ after ‘200’ ranked games, the system knows how I will play. However, the ‘SBMM’ doesn’t take into consideration how exhausting this is for me when I am having to play all of these wildly unbalanced matches over and over again non-stop to help the game decide the rank of these other players. Only 15% of my games feel ‘balanced’ or nearly ties.

It is causing burnout. I wish if a player had over ‘100’ ranked games they would only stick them in games with other players who have over ‘100’ ranked games. It might take longer to find players, but the games would be more enjoyable and smooth since the ‘SBMM’ would be extremely accurate at that point.

I feel like I’m stuck in an endless loop of wildly unbalanced and unenjoyable matches in ‘Plat VI.’ I’m not good enough to pass ‘Diamond I’ (according to the ‘SBMM’), so with the game being ‘F2P’ and no true solo queue (only solo/duo) I’m going to keep getting unranked players in the majority of my games for the rest of my ranked career, which will eventually lead me to quit playing ranked at some point, unfortunately.
