Questions on the ODSTs.

From the little I have read, I understand that they were around awhile before the Human-Covenant War and they fought against the Insurrection.

What I’d like to know is :

When were the ODSTs formed?

Was there a particular reason for their formation?

When and where was the ODST’s first combat deployment?

Finally, how many Spartan IVs are former ODSTs?

Thanks!

Look it up on Halo Nation. It’s summed up there better than anyone could word it here.

The ODST Unit was made active in 2163, although the first incarnation of this were ‘Drop Jet Platoons’ being developed in 2129. Ideas of drop shocking enemy territory had been toyed with as paratroopers as far back as the 20th century and with the advancement of technology a more efficient way had came about to do this (Drop Pods). The real first engagement ODST’s were deployed in were the Interplanetary War in 2170.

There isn’t sufficient background information on every Spartan IV. However, the amount we have seen with Ex-ODST affiliation is numerous. The majority of Spartan IV’s which have pre-existing experience in the Human-Covenant War would be taken from the ODST Unit due to their more battle hardened nature as opposed to the Marine Corps.

ODSTs main purpose is to drop behind enemy lines and take them out.

I think in leyman’s terms they are a more advanced form of paratroopers and they are cumulative group of most special forces.

Yep, Airborne infantry adjust for the 26th century.

ODST’s to me always seemed classic. Like they’d always been around. I feel like I can relate to ODST’s since they seem more human than anybody else. Even Marines. Because there is story to them but they’re not the invincible Spartans we’re always used to.

There special operations role also seems to make them equivalent to US Army Rangers. Plus their special status in the Marines is very similar to the Rangers in the Army.

I think Marine Raiders might be a better comparison personally. But I dont know if they’re still a thing or not.

They just got reactivated (MARSOC now has their liniage), but they don’t exactly do the same large scale operations that the Rangers do due to size.

I believe they are described in the books as the modern day/future, SpecOps/Calvary. Well trained shock troops able to be quickly inserted into key positions on the battlefield.

Remind me a bit of the French Foreign Legion

Almost all the IV’s who were not former Spartan II or III’s came from the ODST ranks.
Only a small amount of people are not affiliated with those groups got to join. And most of those were people like Locke who were pretty much Spartan level soldiers without the shields.

Not quite. If you look on the wiki many are listed as ODST but a number came from Navy, Army, and non-ODST Marines. If you look at Osiris as an example only one ODST. I wouldn’t be surprised if 343 listed a few more as Air Force, but it’s a diverse bunch.

No S-IIs became S-IVs

Musa-096 is the commander and founder of the Spartan-IV program, although if you want to get technical, he isn’t physically a IV.

He didn’t become an S-IV, he just leads the program. Very different

His name, Musa-096, makes him sound like he was part of the S-II program.

Did he washout during the augmentation process?

Yes he washed out. Stuck in a wheelchair ever since. The Spartan-IV project was his idea

He’s still the only S-II we know of that’s in the Spartan branch of the UNSC. Everyone else still active is still under NAVSPECWAR or ONI’s jurisdiction. For all intents and purposes, as commander of the program, Musa’s as close to a IV as you can get without physically being one.
