Questions about the gravemind

I have some questions about the gravemind in halo 2 and 3 that I hope someone can answer.

  1. On Delta halo, the gravemind had already formed there. How? The gravemind needed tons of organisms to amass to that size, but no one had been on delta halo in millions of years. How did a gravemind form and stay alive for that long?

  2. How did the gravemind teleport master chief to high charity (which wasn’t actually on the halo, but next to it) and the arbiter to the control room?

  3. How did the gravemind get to high charity and capture the In Amber Clad? He was in the depths of halo then somehow managed to get aboard high charity. Also, how did he capture Keyes’ ship?

If anybody can answer these, that’d be great!

  1. No one knows for sure what happened. We know there was a containment breach and AI on Installation 05 had filed reports against 2401 Penitent Tangent for negligence, but how the Flood actually escaped is still a mystery. The description for Backwash mentions “At some point, the Flood breached the containment facility, leading to an outbreak and formation of a Gravemind. It is unknown whether a system malfunction or outside meddling led to the breach.” So it could have been due to Tangent’s negligence, or someone did land on the Ring and tampered with things they shouldn’t have.

Personally I believe the mystery aliens from the Halo: CEA Terminals has something to do with it.

  1. He had control of 2401 Penitent Tangent, which meant he had control of some of the Monitor’s functions. This included the teleportation grid. I’m sure you could ask why he didn’t just teleport himself outside of the Quarantine Zone, but since it was a Quarantine it’s possible Flood infected people couldn’t be teleported. As a Gravemind, that would take him off the list of people who can be teleported. That would explain why he stole the In Amber Clad and used it to escape via slipspace jump.

  2. He has a Flood army at his disposal. The Arbiter had dropped the energy shield surrounding the Quarantine Zone when he was trying to get to the Index. The In Amber Clad could be seen parked just outside the Library when he was racing Keyes to get to the Index. The Flood would have escaped at some point and overwhelmed the ship.

Thanks man

That first question is really interesting. There’s plenty of biomass on a Halo, but you would think there would have to be some large population of squishy sentients around for a Flood infestation to take hold even against basic, automated Sentinels…

Yah unless there were some humans living there, I don’t know how the flood would form into a gravemind.

Probably killing indigenous wildlife? I dunno if the Flood do that though.

If you want to read more into the mystery of the Flood’s outbreak on Delta Halo, you can read the Cold Storage Reports here.
