Questions about the flood

I just started playing Halo CE for fun and after all my years of playing Halo, I never knew the answer to these questions.

  1. How did the flood even survive the Halo firing?

  2. How did Johnson survive the flood?

  1. Halo doesn’t destroy the Flood, it destroys their food. Humans, Covenant, anything. This was answered in Halo 1.

  2. Well, he had a kind of radiation poisoning due to using a whole crate of plasma grenades which jumbled up his body so the Flood couldn’t mimic it, which is required to take over (to put it simply anyway).

I thought it was because Johnson had some mild form of -Yoink!- and that for some reason because of that the flood didn’t recognize him as a sentient creature.
