questions about a recent matchmaking ban

while playing last night i acquired a 1 hour matchmaking ban. through reading the faq on bans and answers to other peoples posts i have learned that some type of program or system monitors many things and disperses bans accordingly. and i have also found that you can find your dnf numbers on this site. my question is this. is there nothing that actually differentiates between matches that end early due to lag and matches that you quit out of? i have never cared too much about win ratio, or k/d ratio i just enjoy shooting at things. i also understand that lag happens even with the best internet connection its semi unavoidable. im not calling anybody out i just want some closure. i take pride in the fact that i dont regularly quit games so the ban was somewhat of a shock to me and at the same time i get that it was basically a “warning” but there is nothing i can do about a match that goes to black screen 20 times then ends, and gets labeled dnf. also im curious what the percentage of dnf/ quit matches is before you get a ban. any help or guidance i can get with this would be appreciated.

no replies? did i post this in the wrong forum?

Taking a quick look at your game history, I see 8 DNFs since yesterday and 24 in the past three weeks.

Here’s the official word:

> Will lag (poor or intermittent network performance) or occasional disconnects due to inconsistent network conditions result in a ban?
>
> Lag, poor network performance, or occasional disconnects will not result in a ban. Please note that while this process is automated, it is accurate. Bans are certainly legitimate, and will stay in force for their stated duration. To keep your matchmaking privileges in good standing, immediately cease any unsociable behavior and wait out the ban.
>
> I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?
>
> Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.

like i said im not trying to be rude that never accomplishes anything. but i remember distinctly going black screen and having 3 matches end yesterday and maybe one or two the previous day. not to mention one of those i ended up back at the xbox home screen. i am not sure how it happened but i didnt tell it to go there. and about being more careful, i backed out of one match on my own accord yesterday . i also wonder if the ban system looks at the quit early stat on your rep? im curious as to why the options for people to choose from when commenting on other peoples performance are so vauge. like i said not trying to make ripples or waste anyones time but looking at my stats doesnt really resolve my questions i looked at my stats and my dnf matches are less than 5% of total gameplay, and y is there not a warning like in reach. if such a system was in place it would alleviate most players bans and complaints …

Like Bungie before it, 343 has never disclosed the inner workings of the Banhammer, so any discussions will be speculative and, ultimately, unsatisfying.

The Official Halo 4 Ban Thread makes for interesting reading.

The only ones I have left are nuetral flag on Ragnarok. I will refrain from this from here on out though.

well then, thank you for what little insight you could provide. as my opinion currently stands there could be vast improvements made in the way bans/matchmaking are handled, and im sure im not the only person who thinks so. i think my biggest beef is with the way the system constantly goes to black screen to try and locate other players for the match. if there is a penalty for quitting make it more drastic and dont add new people to the match. it always sucks to have only two players on your team but what is even worse in my opinion is getting “lagged” out of a game bc the system cant handle everything that is trying to happen at once, and or other people keep quitting out. and then it adds that match to your dnf total. honest players who dont normally quit will not be impacted as bad if that change is/was implimented. at the same time im not professing to be the perfect gamer or teammate. but nobody is. hopefully the current problems are addressed before the next halo is released bc i think it could be detrimental to the overall usage/sales scope. none the less i still enjoy this game and will continue to play it although the methods implemented in discipline for bad gaming manners are beyond my understanding.

> i also wonder if the ban system looks at the quit early stat on your rep?

I don’t have any inside information, but I don’t think Rep is used. There’s no need for it: 343i has access to your game history, which will have an accurate record of every time you’ve ever quit or disconnected.

> i looked at my stats and my dnf matches are less than 5% of total gameplay

To the best of my knowledge, the system looks for a relatively large number of quits in a short period of time. It doesn’t measure it against your entire gaming history.

AFAIK disconnects do count as quits, because otherwise, people could evade bans by unplugging their router or Dashboarding, instead of quitting via the menues. The FAQ states that people won’t be banned for “occasional disconnects.”

If you tend to disconnect from games during host migrations (blackscreens), might I suggest making sure your NAT is Open? I’m not 100% sure about this but it seems like the kind of issue that tends to be related to NAT.
