Questionable Energy Sword change in latest blog

A lot of people saying to just buff the bulldog. But what about maps where there is sword and no bulldog?

P.S why is sword in ranked?

The lore reasoning isn’t working here; prime example, it worked for Emile.

The big thing here is that the person wielding the sword is unshielded. Any damage, be it from a punch, kick, or shot, should kill them. Additionally, on the Lore argument, the energy sword is not a lightsaber. Primarily noted for cauterizing wounds, it certainly could dismember someone (just as any other blade being wielded by a Spartan could).

Yet I would imagine that a Spartan isn’t so easy to dismember, and as well the fact that one has a blade and the other essentially a cudgel (via their weapon) should not put the blade at an advantage.

^This.
It’s funny that there’s still no rhyme or reason as to when that happens.

Finally this is getting reworked. Surviving with a sliver of health when you already had no shields wasnt my favourite idea.

Also, I never realized the bulldog would ever need a buff. That thing’s amazing.

There’s a difference between clashing and double death.

I don’t care about people who don’t have the sword.

So you don’t care about the principles of counter-play?

Halo only works when the experience is good or interesting for both the person with a thing and without a thing. If you’re looking for a game that encourages power trips at everyone else’s expense, play Call of Duty.

But Halo is a carefully balanced machine where even power weapons need drawbacks and weaknesses.

A power weapon must be good, powerful and valuable, but must not be so utterly domineering that it is an instant, guaranteed kill by simply having it.

If you do not understand the principles of Counter-Play, you do not understand Halo.

Finally someone said it. These casuals don’t understand a power weapon shouldn’t be a guaranteed kill

Its not a casual problem, its a stupid problem. But yea, I agree.

A sword has almost always been a guaranteed kill, there’s a difference between a power weapon and insta-kill weapon. A Sword is the later.

Usually casuals are the ones with opinions
“It’s a power weapon” insisting it should be a guaranteed kill.

In the past sword could be traded if they were down enough shields. This is the case from h3 to 5. Infinite broke this rule and made sword never trade

*latter

And, no it’s not. As early as Halo: Reach, you could clash without a sword - if you timed it perfectly, and you still did damage no matter what when meleeing. In Halo: Infinite, it does not matter how much a shieldless player gets melee’d while using the sword. They will always win.

This is a problem, and does not reward thoughtful play or skill.

It’s terrible! It’s absolutely broken and unbalanced.

The Engergy Sword is aguaranteed OHKO against anyone not using a sword/hammer against you. Did you really only ever use it while on yhe brink of death in a melee fight?

So… what I am getting from this thread is that some people want the sword to be both a one hit power weapon AND a pseudo-overshield.

Why don’t we a add a bit of active camo in there for good measure?

What’s the problem with pausing your rampage for just a few seconds to recharge your shields?

Because generally the motto is “no nerf / only buff” unless the balance is so egregiously lopsided that a nerf is a no brainer.

This will only happen if the Sword wielder is weak enough.

Hopefully the sword wielder is still given a decent amount of advantage overall. It would suck to trade on your double kill without taking any non-melee damage for example. So having the trade threshold require significantly low health on the sword wielder’s part would work the best. Halo 3 had a pretty good trading threshold for the sword.

We’ve also had much worse mechanics for the sword in the past. Reach’s “melee block” for example made the Sword one of the most useless weapons in the entire game. Especially with Jetpacks, Armor Lock, and (hilariously) Holograms acting as effective Sword counters too.

Yes it was.

Hope it comes back with Arbiter!

Literally came up against this situation tonight.

CTF. Overtime.

Opponent had the sword and I had to confront him. They killed me but I popped his shield and then some.

A team mate coming to help meleed them and the sword player cut then down and continued on with no shields.

It definitely should have been a trade.

Luckily we managed to return that flag and win.
