Questionable Energy Sword change in latest blog

So 343 changed the energy sword to make it so if both players melee each other and one has a sword but the other doesn’t then both die. Why? That negates the point of having a sword to begin with. Here’s an idea, how about you buff the Bulldog to make it an actual shotgun and point blank? Seriously the bulldog is such a garbage tier weapon it could use some TLC. Why nerf the energy sword instead of buffing the bulldog to make it an energy sword counter?

If they nerfed the energy sword and you think the bulldog was already bad, doesn’t that still make it balanced?

such a weird shotgun. ive been one shotted at distance, and other times had it do basically no damage at point blank. usually a consistent 2-3 shots to kill. but those inconsistencies are wack. especially the one shot at range.

The change only applies to scenarios where both players’ shields are depleted. In this case one hit from anything should kill the player. I think it makes sense that players trade in this scenario.

“perfectly balanced”

I do question the value in using it. It seems like the negatives just completely out weight the positives now on the sword. Having absolutely no range on the weapon, as well as a bright blue sword that makes you stick out like a sore thumb. Now when you get within usable range on the weapon, you’re probably already low on shields, if any at all, you melee, and he counter melee’s, and now you die along side him.

Seems like a lot of work now just to go for a trade off. More so it seems like other weapons will be just about as effective at meleeing as the sword itself will.

Yeah, why would I want to use this weapon now again? I thought it was a power weapon of all things…

The only time you’re going to get a clean kill with this thing is if you catch people around corners with it. In levels though where they’re have any openness to them, I wouldn’t be surprised if people never even bothered to touch the weapon again. Too much risk, not enough reward.

If the trade opportunity doesn’t only occur when the sword player is low, I’m rioting

I think if both shields are depleted and you go for a sword kill and they melee you at the same time it’s right that you should both die.

I didn’t even realise the actual situation until I read it in the blog.

Is that true? Because thats a terrible idea if so, especially when regular melee trades don’t work properly to begin with.

It doesn’t matter, the Sword has NEVER worked like that before, the bulldog should be buffed to be used as a counter rather than the energy sword being nerfed.

I’ll need to see the changes in action - but it sounds like a positive move.

And if they can improve melee registration as well! That’s a bonus.

Not much is more frustrating that shooting a sword wielder 3 or 4 times then smacking them at the last moment of desperation only to see them run/grapple away.

Hopefully this change doesn’t take it too far in the other direction, but I think it’s a good change.

I mean meleeing someone with a sword made of plasma 100% should not work out for the swordless party. If MP is supposed to be canon, then explain how someone can punch through a plasma sword.

Sorry but this is a bad change from both a mechanical standpoint and a lore based standpoint.

No, that’s not what the blog states.

‘Right now, if both players are no shields and they melee each other, the player with the Energy Sword will survive with a sliver of health. This upcoming update will update the melee logic so both players trade melees and die’

If the sword wielding player had no shields and was shot by any weapon, they’d die. If they are hit with a melee, but not attacking themselves, they’d die.
Why should swinging a sword prevent that?

Swing a sword made of plasma should prevent the melee kill because the person doing the melee, lore wise, would be down an arm. Mechanically, the sword has NEVER worked like that in ANY other Halo title, just buff the bulldog and leave the sword alone.

Balanced Gameplay is generally more important then franchise lore when it comes to video games.

Simply carrying a sword doesn’t make someone immune. Lore wise or not.

It’s a good move for the game and will help stop OP sword rampages. Players will need to be a little more careful as to when to charge in.

You don’t punch through the sword, you hit them in the throat at the same moment you get impaled.

Trading with swords has been a thing in the past.
Also Reach had a mechanic where a correctly timed melee would clash the sword and cancel damage. That makes less sense than trading.

You’ve only played Infinite for four hours. Why are you even here?

Side note; Its because the sword was op regardless of any other weapon. Plus, the sword is on maps the bulldog isn’t.

This is a reasonable change.

Answer me this:

  1. Is Sword not classified as a Power Weapon? Like other weapons, Grav Hammer, Rocket Launcher, ect.?
  2. How useful is the Sword outside of melee distance?

I thought being completely worthless outside of melee range was a pretty fair balancement.
