what do you guys think the new Spartans in halo 4?
They are spartans with a few more humanistic qualities. They whine, complain, make crude jokes (like many of us) and are all around less “robotic” in a sense compared to the Spartan II’s or III’s. Not surprising, considering they probably came from normal families and weren’t conscripted into the program at a young age. I do not know if they are considered weaker than the previous generations but from the looks of it, they aren’t really as “badass”.
I’m a fan of them. UNSC wanted a new Spartan program and wanted it soon, so no time for training for years from childhood etc etc. So they took the best of the best ODST, marines etc and genetically enhanced them. The only thing I don’t like is most of the helmets, most are hidious. They only good looking ones to me that don’t look all alien or promethean like are recruit, scout, recon, mark vi, air assault, well you catch my drift…
For now, they seem like poor replacements. I really don’t get a “Spartan” vibe from any of them. The only S-IV I really like is Thorne, all the others just seem highly emotional and thick headed, ie Palmer, or don’t take their jobs seriously, ie the rest of Majestic.
Spartan IVs spend all day in the basement of their starship playing holographic video games and drinking Asteroid Dew.

how about the friendly Elites?
I haven’t really played spartan ops (not interested), but I don’t care for 343’s interpretation. It’s too flashy.
For example, the opening video on campaign. Spartans do flips and crazy acrobatics and stuff? They’re soldiers. What happened to using their guns and equipment?
A brawl now and then would be cool, but when you’re facing alien races twice your size…I just don’t see it…
I understand they are augmented and all, which allows them to perform better athletically. I just don’t think it’s realistic for actual combat situations.
And the armor looks like something out of an anime. Which I grew out of in high school. So…Halo 4’s Spartans IMO are a little off.
I like the idea of resurrecting the spartan program (it was kind of necessary to really keep the ball rolling with the series), and I like having some characters with personality, but they are soldiers in the end and 343 should keep that in mind.
Too bad Bungie left. 343 just doesn’t pull it off the same.

Spartan IV’s are basically ODST’s in better armor. I see nothing special about them except from Thorne.
They are nothing like the Spartan II’s or III’s who actually took their job seriously.
And is it just me or do the Spartan’s IV’s dislike the Chief? Probably because he’s more BA then them =P

are you saying Spartan IV’s are not real Spartans?

With more time they can be, but at the moment…no

The S-IIs and S-IIIs never knew anything outside of being a soldier, so it wasn’t that they took their job seriously, it was that it is all they know how to do

Halsey said (well, implied) it. if we look at the origins of the Spartans (Not thr ORION project but the Ancient Greek Spartans) They were raised to become soldiers. Most of them did no know anything else but war and fighting. The S-IVs do not fall into this description of a Spartan, hence, they are not real Spartans

thats interesting sounds like 343 doesn’t even know what Spartans is. (No offense 343 industries)
Not a fan at all. This is mostly due to the fact that the only Spartan IVs that we have seen are Majestic team and Palmer, who, as one forum member said awhile back, are the Jar Jar Binks of the Haloverse. I know some people say they are portrayed this way so that they act more like humans and not robot-like a la Master Chief, but that’s no excuse for Palmer and company to behave like immature teenagers. Reach proved that Spartans could have distinct personalities and still be professional, kick-butt super soldiers. Heck, even Buck’s ODST squad is more professional than these Spartan IVs.

343i does know what Spartans are. The Spartan II’s and III’s where trained from childhood, augmented, then fitted with armor. The S-IV’s received the same, albeit the training from childhood. ONI is not going to completely change the name of their program since the soldiers don’t fall under ancient Greek Spartans in learning combat from a young age.
I concur with others in that from what we have seen so far, the Spartan-IV’s are lacking from their earlier generation counterparts. But we must release that these Spartans have not received the extensive training from childhood like the II’s and III’s, so their attitudes will most definitely differ.
I don’t believe you need to be trained from childhood to be effective and likeable as a Spartan. Thorne already shows potential, and Crimson doesn’t appear to be slackers.
And the program had many a member, so I think basing the entirety of the Spartan-IV’s on just one team and a Commander is a little shallow.
They feel so weak and easily killed. I was told I would feel like a super hero. I felt no such thing. Move to slow, and shields take forever to recharge. What is so super? Other than their computer targeting systems allowing them to spam death with super spam powers. What’s so super?
Spoiled. Controllable. Easy to Create. Super Soldiers.
I don’t get the Spartan vibe from them like I do from the S-II’s or S-III’s.

While I agree with you that there are Spartan IVs that are professional soldiers, it’s not really fair to call us shallow because it was 343i who chose to present unlikable characters as the face of the Spartan IV program. It’s probably a safe bet to say that if Bungie had decided to make the Chief an idiot, nobody would really like or care about the Spartan IIs.
Overconfident and mass-produced living puppets who think they are superior because they’re wearing high-tech armor.
