Question Of the day: Halo 5's trailer

how did you react when you saw the trailer?

I was like: what?! No halo 2 anniversary?! Why???. Then I heard some music that resembled halo 3 music and I calmed down.

I wasn’t impressed. What the Hell did I just watch and What the -Yoink- is this -Yoink- were both common thoughts I had after.

I was like OH F*** YEAH! It’s the Chief!

I’m really looking forward to next year is all I can say.

meh

that pretty much sums up my thoughts about the trailer

even though it didn’t show much it could have been a thousand times better with the addition of a single yet utterly vital component. Music.

Sure the trailer has music but it’s hardly worth mentioning. It doesn’t begin until the second half of the video and builds to crescendo that doesn’t really go anywhere. It tapers of when the chief looks at his hand and then returns but again doesn’t go anywhere.
It should have reached a climax in sync with the video and exploded into an audiophilic experience as the chiefs helmet is exposed.

All the focus is presumably on ‘the graphics’ (from a content pov) and they just don’t seem to understand the importance of music in creating a lasting emotional response and engaging an audience.

Show me some great gameplay from Halo CE, 2 or 3 and it’ll make me remember the good times i’ve had and smile… but play me the music and my entire body will tingle because the emotional response generated by it is so much greater.

Case in point… Listen to the difference

Halo 5 - E3 2013
VS
Halo 3 - E3 2006

The Halo 3 trailer for lack of a better word is epic, and it’s the 60 piece orchestra and 25 piece choir that makes it so.

Is my emotional response to the Halo 3 trailer amplified by nostalgia? Probably, so I’ll give another example.

Destiny Reveal - Pathways Out of Darkness

Listen to 1 minute of this starting from where the link takes you (espically the 15 second period of the video from 3:18 to 3:33 when it shows the man himself) it has more emotion in it than the entire Halo 5 teaser.

Im sure they are more than sick of hearing this but 343 could learn a lot from bungie (Though I understand that Martin O’donnell does give bungie an unfair advantage over 343 in the music department)
