I know why the Spartan IIs were called that in-universe, but what was the real reason for the name. Were Spartan Is already a concept during development of Combat Evolved?
They wanted it to be clear that they were super soldiers. Spartans are the most iconic soldiers in history. Plus they were trained from children just like the Spartans in Halo.
If I had to guess the II was meant to mean a direct descendants of the original Spartans of Greece. Spartans, Variation II
Good question. I honestly don’t know.The book the Fall of Reach was published in 2001 so it might say something about the Spartan Is in that book. I can’t remeber cause I read the book a while ago.
Orion Twoers sounds less good than Spartans. It was based on the myth that a few Spartans could turn the tide of a battle against a superior army.
Project ORION came first, the project was attempting to create super soldiers by augmenting volunteer soldiers to be faster, stronger etc. The project was considered a failure. Years later Doctor Catherine Halsey wanted to achieve the same goal and in the process bring an end to the Human Colonies insurrection. When she began the project she wanted to distance herself from ORION as much as possible. She also took inspiration from the “Spartan’s” of Sparta in ancient human history and how they were taken as children to be trained as soldiers. She was fascinated with the concept of making a soldier purely bred for war and named the second super soldier project SPARTAN II (subsequently Project ORION member’s were sometimes known as SPARTAN I’s) I hope this answers your question.

If your saying what I think your saying then Bungie and the writers had written Spartan 1/Orion from day one. Project Orion is mentioned in The Fall of Reach. (FYI fantastic book)
