I watched this whole event yesterday which was really good. The only thing that I dont understand at all is the announcers said that in the grand finals that for Tox to win they would have to beat Splyce in TWO best of seven series. Please correct me if I am mistaken. If that is the case that is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in any sporting event. Could you imagine a world series or a Stanley cup final where one team has to win two entire series and the other team only has to win one? That is such a disadvantage that it makes the whole grand finals pointless. I dont bet but could you imagine the odds in a team actually pulling that off? Highly unlikely at best. This should never be set up this way. Why can’t they just have a normal bracket like NCAA basketball or any other sport on earth. I have to say that killed my enjoyment of the event immediately even though the rest was amazing. I retract everything I just said if I am mistaken. Help me understand what happened here.

Well, I only made it to the Eliminations R2. However, the only way Tox would’ve had to do that would be Tox being in the Elimination side when facing Splyce in the GF. Getting into the Elimination bracket would have to mean Tox lost before the finals somewhere down the line, giving them that disadvantage. It was the reverse situation back in Columbus.

They did lose to splyce in the finals, before the grand finals and were in the loser bracket. That said I dont think in the championship match that one team should be at such a disadvantage. In the grand finals of all these events is one team always at such a disadvantage? They should use a normal bracket. Tox should have been eliminated when they lost to splyce the first time. I dont like the way the bracket works in this. I can’t believe how stupid this is. Months and months building up to this only to have a final that only 1 team realistically has a chance to win.

It is a massive disadvantage, but even in a normal bracket I doubt Tox would’ve stood a single chance if Columbus was anything to go by.
But yeah, I agree. The tournament organization has too many kinks and weird aspects.

I agree. They did not stand a chance any way but 2 entire 7 game series in a row was straight impossible. It really soured me on the tournament that I totally loved up until that moment. I almost turned it off before the final match. I felt there was no point in even watching it. If they want to bring esports and competitive halo to the masses they need to get rid of crap like this. It should be you lose and your out. Or at least if you make it to the final it’s a fair match. That I could live with.
The Stanley cup playoffs are a single elimination tournament. It’s a completely different format. Other tournaments like those that are found quite often in minor hockey are double elimination. This is like the halo structure. Each team is allowed 2 losses in this format and guaranteed to play at least 2 series.
The reason why splyce only needed one win is because they won the winners bracket. Tox was in the losers bracket. Splyce hadn’t lost in the tournament yet.
It’s not really that bad in my opinion. Getting to the finals in the winner bracket has an advantage. It’s not unheard of to win two best of 7’s in the finals.
I like the format. Double elimination means the tournament goes on longer too, and teams have a chance to get back in it. You talk about them doing all that work just to have to win 8 games in the end. Well imagine doing all that work and playing one team losing all three games and then that’s it your done. I doubt any of the pros would be interested in that.

the way you explained is pretty good.
in more plain words would be
to be champion you need 3 dollars
splyce had 2 dollar for winning all the matches.
tox had 1 cause they loose 1 match.
that been said. tox had to win 2 rounds to get 2 dollar to be champ.
its more simple or a went to far??
I really don’t see the issue. If it was a best of 7, 14, or 21 The team that wins the first best of 7 pretty much won every game after that. Even if they had to play the next best of 7, Splyce probably would have won 4-0 twice. [Longer games are more exciting to watch ;)]
I just think it made the biggest match pointless. I dont mind the whole loser bracket thing but I dont want to see a final like that. Nobody would watch the world series or the superbowl if one team had to win double what the other team does. Dont mind the loser bracket but I dont think it should affect the final match. This is where esports totally loses me.
Double elimination tournaments have been a thing in Halo since forever. Frankly, single elimination tournaments suck to watch and the pros don’t like single elimination either. If they liked them and advocated for it, that’s what we would be playing.
Its double elimination… Key word, double. A team has to lose twice to be eliminated. Tox has already lost once and Splyce hadn’t lost any.
Splyce knocked them down to the Losers Bracket anyway. It’d be like if in the World Series they didn’t count the first two games and whoever won 3 after that was the winner.

I dont mind the double elimination anywhere in the tournament except in the final match. That should be played on even ground.
