Moving into a new apartment.
I will have a 2-5 mbps DSL wireless network and a wireless adapter on my console. Will I be able to play Halo Reach and Halo 4 with this? Anyone have experience with this kind of thing? Lag? Delays?
To be more specific: It is a 5mbps DSL line with a wireless router. It is occasionally used by other people. I am considering a wireless “N” adapter for my gaming console.
Thank you
Yeah you can, you might lag in certain games tho.

You will need atleast 3mbps to connect to XBOX live, but even if you can connect to live, i think it will lag horribly. your connection is not recommended for online gaming.

Nope.

Holy misinformation Batman!
You only need 28kbps to connect to live without issue.
You only need 64kbps to play anything up to 8 players in Halo with voice and no lag.
Even video streaming requires less than 3mbps…
The real issue is ping, jitter and packet loss. Test it all here.
Pings under 100ms are fine.
Jitter under 10ms is fine.
Packet loss should be 0%.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. Also a thanks for the inclusion of Batman, I love Batman. You’ll be totally fine. The one problem you may run into is interference from neighbors due to the small space with lots of modems and routers, not to mention all the other wireless stuff we use.

Agreed, ensure you wireless is secure too. No matter how good you think your connection is, downloading anything will cause significant lag.
And if you want a more detailed breakdown of your connection, try here. Test both speed and conduct a “VOIP” test. Voip (voice over I.P) is very similar to gaming.
I would use ETHERNET to get the most out of your speed but if you have to use wireless, I recommend making sure it’s encyrpted so no one can steal your connection when playing.
Yes, but you’ll lag, and DC every time someone farts.

Thats completely false, I have played on .725 smoothly and 1.5mbps and now I use 3.0mbps, and it runs perfectly smooth, you can play on mostly anything that is DSL level.
You can still port forward or open DMZ (I think) or tweak with settings to generally increase the quality of connection, but 3 MB is more than enough - As somebody said before, you don’t need even 1 mb for Xbox Live with no lag.

No, you won’t.

Wireless is perfectly fine as long as the reception for both the Xbox and Router is fine.
If you’re 10+ metres away or through multiple walls, I would go with Ethernet.
Anything less than 3.0mbps however should definately disconnect other big data users such as PCs or Laptops connected to the internet, especially if your not using a Ethernet and directly connected to your Gateway/Router.
Otherwise you can have a small interference now and then while everythings uploading data to multiple devices.
My friend with 5mbps you will have no problems what so ever I believe.
Thanks guys. Canceling the excavators. Ordering wireless adapter.
