In Halo 2, we are introduced to a faction of the Covenant who appear to be in charge researching and protecting a platform on the gas giant of Threshold I think. Now in both the classic and Anniversary versions of Halo 2 as well as the terminal videos the Elites armor, the Grunts armor and even their vehicles have a distinct look and style that makes you able to tell the difference between Heretic and Covenant forces.
My question is do you guys think this visual difference is canon and has some supporting text and reasoning behind their different armor and equipment? Or do you think the visual difference is purely for the benefit of the player so that they know who to shoot?
The “off-camera” reason is absolutely so that the player can easily tell the difference of who to shoot when playing as the Covenant in those levels.
The “in-universe” reasoning is probably 2-fold: 1) the gas masks and jet packs are useful to them since they made their base on a mining plant of a gas planet, 2) they abandoned the traditional Covenant look when they rebelled as a symbolic thing.

But in the terminal they already had those armors before Sesa decided to rebel against the Propeths.
They were the Covenant artifact retrieval team that could also explain their different armors.

That seems to make sense. I think I believe the idea that this might be unique equipment given for 1.) Units operating for an extended period on a gas planet probably need different equipment than the standard Covenant military. 2.) This could also be the armor given specifically to Forerunner artifact retrieval units or at least this specific group.
Thank you guys for the responses. Was just wondering if anyone knew if this had a written canon explanation but I’d say these are pretty good theories.

You’re welcome.
Meanwhile, I remembered Halo Combat Evolved, where the Covenant - at the last 2 level - sends the (Covenant) Special Operations, you know those who wear black armors, Grunts have Fuel Rod Cannons and Elites throw grenade very well.
So, that should also confirm, what you said about why the Heretics had different gears too.

The Banshees are the Type-26AZ variant, which is designated for artifact hunting and recovery. There’s also the Type-26BZ, which is based on the Type-26B variant from Halo Reach and 4, and are found in Halo 2 Anniversary’s multiplayer (in Forge, at least).
The Heretic Sangheili and Unggoy are wearing specialized equipment for respiration purposes in the Threshold gas mine.

Again linking on to their suits. They properly(some might of already, but they all joined in) started wearing the colors of Sangheilios post-meeting 343.
