Got a question for the halo 4 ending. If you beat the game, help me understand something.
Towards the end the mission was to bring that mini nuke to the composer and arm it manually. Cortana mentions that there will be a small time window to get out. When the chief actually does arm it, it explodes instantly. Did i miss something? Wasnt there supposed to be a short window of time for them to escape? Also did she protect him from the blast with some sort of shield or how did he survive it?
I’ve been wondering that myself. And what was up with Chief and Cortana’s farewell? Where/how did that take place?
I guess she must’ve used that teleportation system one last time to eject the Chief from the Didact’s ship, but apart from that, there’s still a lot of questions to be answered. Does the Didact live? Has he been made machine by the Composer? Where does this go in terms of Halo 5? All very interesting.
The material surrounding them looks like the stuff that last bridge was made of. Cortana had control of that bridge last with several duplicated copies, so perhaps her last actual person manipulated the bridge into a barrier at the right time. She did say she devoted the last of her to get John out.
Its hard to say, but I think thats pretty much how she did it. I guess they weren’t planning on such a sudden detonation at first, perhaps they thought they’d have time to arm it and get out.

He does live, if you listen to the after-credits ending.
He survived because, remember, when he was activating the Composer, Cortana said “Slipspace rupture detected!”, which was located directly under the Composer, that means he went through the slipspace portal to the other side probably leading somewhere in the galaxy where he was later picked up by some Storm scouts. Due to the forerunner’s advanced technology and armour, it would be pretty logical if he survived the jump through the portal without any kind of ship that has a shield, considering his armour is pretty advanced.
That’s my theory, I know he’s still alive but the question still remains; how.
I think either you’re supposed to assume John lit it off immediately to make sure things went right (sacrificing himself if needed,) or Cortana intentionally lied to him so she could save him at the cost of herself.
Also, as for the scene in slip/space…I’ll copy/pasta something I posted in another thread about that…
Cortana isn’t dead. This is a cliffhanger ending, and a device to push the Chief into breaking his one track mind of sole duty with no life.
Think only to when the Librarian talked directly to the Chief, and said the Diadect was digitizing humans/others and trying to starve the flood that way, then putting them back in bodies. It didn’t work…but it’s foreshadowing that Halsey or John and Cortana will find a way.
They’re going to give Cortana a real body in the end, or that’ll be one possibility for curing her rampancy. Having an actual brain will cure it, since she won’t have to think herself to death.
It’s also hinting at how Humanity might finally “achieve the mantle.” If they succeed in this over the Forerunners not being able to manage it, not only bridging the gap between man and machine, but Chief possibly being the key to the next step in human evolution.
Least, parts of my general theory right now after a single play through, but we’ll see.
I’m pretty sure Cortana put up a shield. She said something about how she had to use everything she had left to save him. You could also see parts of the ship crumbling and falling outside the shield. Then when Cortana dies, the shield dies too, and Chief is in frefall in space.
