The are for all intents and purposes the modern Precursor form. It is as the Lord of Admirals said, the Precursors existed in many forms over the eons, they are deathless. The Flood is merely how they arose in this cycle of their life.

The Gravemind is actually the Primordial. He put his consciousness into the Gravemind before he died on Installation 07. The Flood (parasite stemmed from defected Precursor DNA) is at the disposal of the Primordial, bent on vengeance against their creation.
