Q: which books to read to understand the campaign?

Hey all - personally loving mp, but have played only 20 min of the campaign, partly due to loving mp. But in that 20 min, things were referenced like Halsey’s arm, and the fact that a lot of fans says sign were there if you read the books. So, which books should I read to understand what the heck is happening?

So many halo books, so this would help? Thank you

If I were to say " Read all of them" would you rage? Because that’s basically what you have to do.

dude…thats a lot of reading. They sell a Cliff Note’s edition?

Just play Halo 4’s campaign and Spartan Ops. You’ll get the gist of what’s going on. Some of the Fireteam banter between Blue team, and even some with Buck on Osiris requires backstory to understand. Buck talks about his relationship with Veronica Dare and how what’s happening on Meridian is New Alexandria all over again. You have to play Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach to understand those references.

Halsey lost her arm in the last game…So you could play that?

How many books are they?

She lost her arm in Halo 4? I don’t recall, and yeah, played the games so know Dare and Buck were an item. Thanks all

I’ve read all the books(so far) but when I tried to tell my sons some cool facts related to the current and future story line like Vale, Rubicon, Chakas, Bornstellar, Buck, they had already picked most of them up through the “Universe” vids on the Halo Channel and Waypoint. Condensed version but gets the point across. Forerunner and Kilo 5 series are relevant but the newest books give more info and background. I listened to many using Audible app while being productive.

Great recommendation, Halo New Blood covers most of ODST and the transition of Alpha team to Spartans.

First Strike, Fall of Reach, Ghosts of Onyx

Those are books 1-3? Read the first two, but not Onyx

Escalation (comic series) is definetly the most important source of post-Halo 4/pre-Halo 5 information, and it ends next month with the final issue in the Janus Key story arc. Halopedia has summaries for all 28 (I think it’s 28) released issues, so if you don’t want to dig around for back issues, just go and read them.

I haven’t really read any of the books or anything, although I did watch Halo Legends, Forward Unto Dawn and Nightfall… I think all you really need to do to understand what’s going on is play Halo 4. Although I won’t pretend like I understand how Prometheans still exist after Halo 4, or where Promethean Soldiers came from… or Warden Eternal.

You can buy the audio books and listen instead! :p. Maybe watch some lore vids on you tube as an alternative

Good suggestions all - thanks!

This, but Hunters in the Dark is another one that should be read to better understand Vale. What happens to her in that book is really interesting but I won’t spoil anything. Last Light is another good one if you wanted to know more about Blue Team besides TFoR and First Strike.

Lastly, the Kilo-Five Trilogy (Glasslands, The Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata) are pretty amazing and explains what happens to Halsey after Onyx and more about the civil war on Sanghelios.

Hunters in the Dark Establishes Olympia Vale, New Blood find out About Buck and his old ODST Squad and Halo escalation issue 17 and 18 establishes Holly Tanaka
and Locke is Halo Nightfall

Reach is one of the best ones so I will recomend it.
