Should the ability to affect the movement of another player be incorporated into Halo 4?
The Concussion Rifle pushes enemies backward.
The Energy Sword pulls you forward to your enemy.
Would equipment that used the concept of push and pull be acceptable?
Imagine the opposite of the Energy Sword, the Nano Whip. The Energy Sword deals instant death on contact, the Nano Whip deals no damage on contact. The Energy Sword pulls you to your enemy, the Nano Whip pulls your enemy to you.
The Concussion Rifle is an offensive weapon with the ability to push players back. What if a Jackal Shield could be held by the player to shield himself from incoming frontal fire. Meleeing an enemy with the shield would push them back like a Concussion Rifle. The melee push would cause no damage.
These two pieces of equipment, the Nano Whip and the Deployable Shield, are opposites of each other. The Nano Whip pulls enemies to you, forcing an immediate fight, while the Deployable Shield pushes enemies from you, delaying the inevitable fight.

You mean you want CoD’s Riot Shield in Halo?
We all know how that worked out for the fans…
The unique evolution of equipment from glorified grenades into items that can modify enemy movement is what i am going after here. A Gravity Grenade, that flings enemies without damaging them, would also fit into this theme of equipment. A Sludge Grenade that creates a small pool of liquid that drastically slows the movement of any player passing through is another.

These are good concepts, but I’m skeptical about making weaponry purely for those purposes. I personally would rather have a couple weapons use those effects as a highlighted perk of the weapon, but not as the sole purpose of the weapon itself.
These are not weapons, the Nano Whip or the Deployable Shield, they are equipment that is picked up from the map. The same goes for the Gravity and Sludge “Grenades”. These “Grenades” would be in the same category, equipment, as the whip and shield. I only used the word grenade to describe how they function. The common theme in all of these items is 1) no damage to the enemy and 2) influences enemy movement in some manner.

The whip and shield seem less likely to be utilized as equipment, because you have to aim it, and have an accuracy that isn’t quite mimicked by the Halo series’ current use of equipment, but the grenades sound like a great idea, greatly slowing player movement within a certain radius. That could be used to great lengths to defend an objective, or to keep enemies from encroaching on a flag that the team is trying to send back to the base.
Another mask that the Sludge Grenade could wear is the Cryogenic Grenade. Throwing one on the ground would still create a pool of liquid that slows the movement of any player passing through but the Cryo Nade would have the added benefits of 1) freezing an enemy in place with a direct hit and 2) turning an impassable body of water into a sheet of ice that can be walked over for a short period of time.
-
Freezing an enemy does not damage him but one melee will shatter and kill the frozen enemy. A frozen enemy can be used as cover against the enemy team forcing them to shatter your cover, killing a team mate in the process or shoot around their frozen ally hoping he will thaw out before being shattered by you or them.
-
Turning lethal water that drowns you into ice that you can walk over is a big deal. Creating a new and unexpected path to attack the enemy from is certainly advantageous. Walking on frozen water is risky though because an enemy can easily shoot the ice, cracking it and killing you, if he catches you walking across the ice.
I can’t see any of these ideas being useful.
Energy sword doesn’t pull, you lunge…

So pulling an enemy down from the advantageous high ground with the Nano Whip or blocking a rushing shotgunner with the Deployable Shield is not useful?
What’s the difference between my explanation of the Energy Sword pulling you to your enemy and your explanation of “you lunge”? Nothing but semantics.

Not gameplay usefulness, sandbox usefulness. Halo is a sandbox game, if you haven’t noticed.
I thought this thread was going to be about push pull steering…
> So pulling an enemy down from the advantageous high ground with the Nano Whip or blocking a rushing shotgunner with the Deployable Shield is not useful?
Why should you be able to pull an enemy down from the advantageous high ground or block a rushing enemy who has a shotgun? The answer is: you shouldn’t. In both scenarios the opponent has earned the superior position, so simply being able to nullify it is just a crutch for bad players. A bit like armour lock…
> I can’t see any of these ideas being useful.

> Energy sword doesn’t pull, you lunge…
Same. This is just bad echoes of the thread where the OP didn’t like that NOBODY liked his “Grenade Kick” and “Energy Parachute” ideas.
Let the developers DEVELOP the game is what I say.

If an enemy has a vehicle and you go find the Spartan Laser and destroy the vehicle, wouldn’t that be the same as the enemy having the high ground so you go find the Nano Whip and pull them down? In both scenarios the enemy had the advantage, vehicle or high ground, but there is an appropriate tool to counter that advantage, Spartan Laser or Nano Whip, that you can seek out.
> Halo is a sandbox game, if you haven’t noticed.
A sandbox game has an open world and non linear gameplay. If what you mean is Halo has a well defined “weapon sandbox” then I would say that every Halo has added, removed, and modified the weapon sandbox. Some Halo 3 Equipment is offensive, the Power Drain, and others are defensive, the Bubble Shield. The Nano Whip is similar to the Power Drain in the fact that it forces enemies out of a location. The Deployable Shield is similar to the Bubble Shield in the fact that it gives the user a temporary barrier between them and their enemy.
I like these ideas. Maybe not so much the Nano Whip and Energy Shield but the Cryo nade and gravity nade sound great. However, I’m not sure if these are more like H3’s Equipment or HR’s Armor Abilities. Will they be pickups or will we spawn with them? Maybe both?
OK, this is how I see the Grav. Nade (we gotta come up with a better name for that) working. You throw it like one of Halo 3’s equipments, not an actual grenade. That way everyone gets pushed away, including the thrower (so watch where you throw it, eh?) You can push someone off an edge, but if you’re not careful… “suicide.”
Will the Cryo nade function like an actual grenade, or like equipment?
To me, the nano whip / energy shield sound like AA’s, the way you’ve described them. But I can also see them working as pickups (like the Jetpacks on MLG Sanctuary).

I think there should be 4 grenade types that are selected using the d-pad. The B button would become the use Equipment button.
Humans spawn with drags. Elites spawn with plasmas. The other two types are pick ups.
Equipment is pick up in most game types. Invasion will spawn you with your classes respective Equipment.

cool ideas, but generally speaking you want to distance yourself from people not pull them at you (via nano whip). i guess if the whip made it so they couldnt melee immediately after being pulled it would be good (or at least fit a niche role).

I see you also made a thread about fire and ice grenades. So are you ditching the grav nade, because that one was my favorite! (And I do think the grav nade would function better as equipment.)

Well yeah… My friend Sad Panda and I boosted our way up through almost all of the ranks boosting with the -Yoink!- things…
That and 3rd Person Tactical…
Oh, and it’s good for trolling the enemy when you’re bored…
