Purpose of the Harvester?

So in a couple missions in Spartan Ops, the Covenant Harvester was mentioned and in one chapter you even shut it down.

What is the purpose of the Harvester? I assume that its a Covenant excavation device but I’m not sure.

Personally, every time I hear Harvester, I think of Mass Effect with the Collector’s harvesting humans.

I was also disappointed when the Harvester ended up being a stationary object and I was expecting it to be something massive you’d have to fight your way through. Plus, rendering it inoperable by blowing up a couple computers just doesn’t seem logical.

So what exactly is the Covenant Harvester’s purpose?

You’ll find out its purpose, in time.

I’d kind of like more of an explanation that, “Its the bad guys’” before I blow it up.

To harvest I suppose. It digs deep into the earth.

I didn’t understand what the harvester was supposed to be the first few times I played the level. From looking at it I thought it was a fossil of a precursor.

That would be pretty sweet but I think the concept behind the harvester is that it’s a giant covenant hive. It might be their equivalent of the mammoth (command/support) but there might still be enough giant-death-beams involved to make it a heavy hitter too.

It’s a very big pretty thing is also a pant-wettingly awesome plot device, which will presumably do something more impressive than sit around in future episodes of Season 1.

Well, each civilisation gets a Harvester and they’re used to gather Tiberium to fund your expansion.

Different Harvesters come equipped with different offensive and defensive mechanisms and these can range from rocket launchers to the ability to stealth.

You’ll want to protect your Harvester as no other vehicle can gather Tiberium.

It’s so we can backtrack to that map area at least seven times like all other Spartan Ops missions.

As to canon-wise, I haven’t got a clue.

Brace for disappointment

Funny but I think that’s exactly what it does in Halo 4 since I believe it turns humans into Prometheans which is why there are no bodies to recover.

For the use of excavation of Forerunner artifacts from the looks of it.
