I’ve seen a few videos and posts which mention that the Precursors’ ‘dust’ malfunctioned when the pets started to eat it and that’s where the flood came from.
Seems to me that in their all knowing being you’d planned it perfectly. They knew they couldn’t keep their knowledge but they knew they could amass it again using Graveminds. I think that this purpose is implied in Primodium when they speak to the Precursor.
The dust did not malfunction, it working as intended. A mass hivemind used to regain a god level of knowledge.
I wish this idea was something explored more in the main games and not just the books (the true purpose of the flood). Maybe if the flood returns? LoL as if.

The novels themselves have made it clear there was no malfunction.
Not sure who is saying other wise but I always recommend reading the trilogy over listening to others talk lore as often they arent as familiar with the narratives as they let on.
Also the floods goal purpose and origins are all well known now from the books and there are several reasons for and ways for them to return in game.
And the upcoming didact novel is likely to ruin at least one of those because narrative management for the IP has been wanting since FoC took the reigns.
Perhaps JS is endeavouring to retify this but itll take work.
Fingers crossed.
It would be nice if the Endless is just a misdirect for the Flood to be brought in. They did mention Offensive Bias, why bother bringing him in unless it involves the monsters he defeated?
But, I don’t know. These Endless could be something different. Maybe swinging into more overtly Lovecraftian stuff and entirely leaving any story threads from the Reclaimer Saga which would include Logic Plague/Flood/Precursor stuff.
Oh it’s not a malfunction. They’re the Precursors curse
and revenge.
I remember the Precursor created the flood as a test for humanity. If they win, they became the mantle, and if they lose, the galaxy is united around the flood.
I don’t know if the gravemind from Halo 2 and 3 is an avatar of the Precursor or just his own master ?
