Purchasing battlepass progression

“If you earn something through gameplay we aren’t going to allow other players to circumvent that by purchasing it in the store”
Rewards from the battlepass are earned through gameplay. And they allow you to purchase battlepass progression. This seems more like payer first not player first. I know the game is free to play and you have to make money. But people are already going to be purchasing the battle passes and premium cosmetics and the campaign part of the game. Why not let people purchase a double XP booster instead? That way they aren’t circumventing gameplay.
And only being able to earn XP from challenges punishes players like myself that have busy lives and play in sprints. I don’t get many days off work but when I do I like to play pretty much all day. But I wouldn’t be rewarded for any of it once the challenges are complete.(I thought MCC had a good challenge/per game XP system)
I know it’s a technical preview and not final. And I absolutely love the gameplay. It looks and feels like Halo for the first time in a long time. I just think the battlepass progression and XP system need to be tweaked. And I definitely don’t like paying for battlepass progression.

TL;DR - Gameplay great! Progression and XP system not so much.

I think a lot of people are going to be very disappointed with the progression system. It is a free-to-play game, despite player friendly systems like permanent battle-pass and challenges which you don’t need to grind, it is still going to be very focused on monetisation.

While you don’t need to grind as hard for them, challenges do present exclusive weekly rewards and are the only way to gain experience. That is very much a FOMO aspect of the game.
Credits being a digital currency which you apparently cannot earn through gameplay is also disappointing. You can theoretically buy 3000cr and instantly unlock the entire battle-pass which kind of the opposite of the entire:

When compared to previous Halo games, Infinite has a really crappy progression system. Under the context of free-to-play games however, it still looks like the most player friendly one out there (Assuming a pack of weapon skins don’t cost $10). So many other games still rely on random chance, loot boxes, and forcing players to play stupid amounts of the game all at once. With Infinite I know that I can always go back and unlock the items I want, whenever I want. I’m still feeling overall positive about this game.

I feel like its a joke the amount of challenges you get once you’re done with the weekly. It’s 1 at a time… seriously? That’s going to make the pass feel like even more of a grind.

Any game will have layer of FOMO. The only FOMO will be possibly seasonal content and store items though

Not sure what you are complaining about, you can purchase Season pass levels with the credits

I believe the comment “if you earn something through game play” is more alluding to event or achievement based rewards, think SR 152 coating.

Then they should probably clarify that if you earn SOME things through gameplay you can’t purchase it in the store. Still, buying everything in the pass circumvents gameplay in a big way.

I know in the context of other free to play games they are doing very well in making it more player friendly. Paying for progress just seems so out of line of their player first approach.

That’s what I’m complaining about lol

I’m not the best with numbers but I feel your pain with the XP / progression system so I decided to do a little math with the challenges.

As it stands currently, a “full cycle” of daily challenges requires you to play 15 matches, with each challenge requiring 2, 3, 4 and 6 matches, respectively - challenges “2-4” award you a uniform 100 XP, while the “6 matches” one gives you 150 XP. Moving some numbers around and counting a few averages shows us that a finished match nets you ~30 XP. Looking purely at these daily challenges as a means of progression with the battle pass and supposing 500XP / level, we arrive at a whopping 16.5 (~17) matches that you would need to play through in order to level up.

17*10 minutes (the length of a slayer match where you steamroll your opponent, like we do with the bots now) is still more than 2.5 hours of playtime per season level. This, I feel to be way more of a time investment than what other games on the market are offering (looking at Call of Duty’s system where Battle Pass progression is more based on time spent playing than the number of finished matches). Supposing that you, for the sake of mathematics, get to play 8 hours a week (enough for ~3 levels), you’d need to play for 33 weeks to max ONE season pass that has 100 tiers.

I am aware that this is not the final build of the game, nor is it said anywhere that this progression system will go unchanged. However, I am filled with a fearful optimism because so far, everything I’ve seen has pointed towards this being a good Halo game. And if we have a good Halo game, why not have one where we can enjoy the game AND show our investment through cosmetics that were earned in a sensible manner?

(On that note, something like the Vidmasters need to make a return, to give the most dedicated layer of players something to strive for)
(Also, sorry for writing a litany under your post but I feel you, especially with how work schedules don’t take daily/weekly challenges into account lol)

I would like to be able to earn XP from matches and earn more based off of personal performance. So when I do get a day to play, I can really focus on grinding.

They stated that anything you earn playing the game or battle pass will not be in the store.
