Purchased Halo 5, Haven't Been Able To Start Game

Hi,

I recently purchased Halo 5 (three days ago), and after installing, the game kept crashing within the first few seconds. Basically, when Microsoft Studios logo comes up.

I thought this was an issue with my install, so I deleted and reinstalled. Issue remained, thought my disc was the issue, returned it, and finally finished reinstalling and the issue still remains.

I can not find a solution anywhere, I have tried the hard restart, deleting reserved space, and multiple attempts later…

Hi.

Thank you for your time, hope to resolve this soon.

If you have done the hard reset start make sure you are wired and not using wireless. Also make sure your NAT is set to Open. Give that a try.

Appreciate the response.

I did the hard reset wired in, I also did another reinstall wired in to see if that would help. Both were to no avail.
So, I checked the NAT setting and have been unable to get it to be Open. Did Port Forwarding, adding the ports, restarting, the 4 shoulder button thing, checked the UPNP setting on my router, all of this…but it is still Strict setting.

What I’m not understanding is when I see others’ issues, they all have been able to start the game at least. I haven’t been able to get past the initial Microsoft Studio seconds in.
By these many installs, its safe to say this isn’t the issue. I have read somewhere that some individuals are having RAM issues?

(Not sure if this is relevant, but Overwatch was recently installed and had no issue in gameplay. I don’t think it has the same hosting service that Halo does, so I didn’t think much of it, but I’m keeping that in mind in terms of hardware issue etc.)

I will say you have a strange thing going on there. One I haven’t come across yet. Out of all the games I have had Halo5 has been the most problematic of all games by far! Still to this day the game doesn’t perform at all like my other shooter games. Each game I play in H5 is always different. Not consistent at all. I still would try and get your Nat set to Open. Check all your privacy settings also. Google how to Open your Nat for xbox. Im sure you will find something on how too. You could try and call xbox/Microsoft support but if you do be prepared for a long phone call. :-/ There is really no support for this game which really is almost a crime. Either way if your Nat is set to moderate you will have to change it to Open sooner or later. Also have you tested your multiplayer connection and xbox connection in the network settings of your xbox? And if so does everything check out good there? If I think of anything else I will post it here for you. And if you find out what was your issue post it here. It might help others if they come up with the same problem as you. Since we are our only support… Good luck my friend!

Thanks again for your response ZIppy.
Further searches narrowed down the explanation to a RAM issue. Its the closest description to what is happening with my game.
So, I checked RAM issue solutions and mostly its the hard reset and/or the unplug variety. I did both of them multiple times, and that hasn’t solved the issue.
Right after, I checked to see if another game disc would work, which it did with no issue. In between all of this, my NAT setting is now on Open.
So, the install is there, the game settings are there, the RAM issue shouldn’t exist because of multiple flushes, and the game disc has been swapped so both can’t be faulty.
I’m low on ideas at the moment.

I’d like to add that my game file is 81.2gb, I don’t think I’m missing anything. I can’t tell because I have yet to see anything in the game lol. They sure ramped up the difficulty of this game it seems, ha.

And no one from the game company runs support? Would explain why I’ve seen so many open-ended threads. Well, back to the drawing board for now.

Well dang!! I was hoping that Nat thing was going to clear it up for you. I will also do some more thinking on this. I hate seeing players not being able to play this game! Also im afraid not. There is no 343i support people on here much. Its a gamble at best. All the moderators on here are not employees but volunteers. There is very little player to company communication on here even though this is there site. Ive tried to get help many times and still no luck. :-/ Post if something changes for you. And if I come across anything new to try I will do the same. Good luck!

One other thing im not sure if you have tried or not but have you power cycled your modem and router? Maybe that might help. Its strange that other games work fine so that is an unlikely solution. You really got me thinking on this one! lol.

I was just talking to someone on Xbox Support, and they gave me a suggestion… and if this works, I’m gonna write a bunch of posts of me just laughing afterward.

Install the game offline.

I’ll be back lol, and to address your last post, I power cycle my connections normally. The way the game is crashing, I don’t think it has to do with those things. It has to do with the game data itself, that is why I have high hopes that this install solution will work.

As the old saying goes “If you hear hooves outside, don’t think zebras.”

Ha Ha I cant wait to hear back from you!! Hope it goes well!

Well, I was hoping to have this all resolved by this post.
Thankfully there is some progress.
I uninstalled and then reinstalled offline like it was recommended. I checked the game then to see if it would work at all. It did, it opened up the game and only had the campaign option available, thereby eliminating problems such as disk not working, or something wrong with the basic install. I didn’t start the campaign, rather connected back online to get the update (35 gigs).
After it installed, I tried turning it on, but it would crash right away like before. I noticed an ethernet wire was still in, so I took that off. Once I did and went offline, the game would start up again. I tried going online while the game was at the menu screen, and it crashed just like before.
Checked NAT status, its back to Strict, and I don’t know why it doesn’t just stay open. I know others have reported problems like this, so I’ll look at that too. In the meantime, what I want to know is why I can access the game if its offline only. I’m assuming NAT goes hand in hand with this, but the fact that if I’m wired in, it won’t start at all either.
I’ll be back, but looking forward to any brainstorms.
(Edit:
Reached 5 post limit of the day. Just wanted to say that right after this post, next restart opened up NAT, but the crash is still occurring. Going to talk to support and see what they say.

Edit 2:

After contact with Xbox Support, and Bluray Cache clearing, Alternate Mac Address Clears, another hard reset, “Licensed” Profile Removal, and another rundown of the gauntlet I’ve written out for you all to see… Xbox Support said to get in contact with the game developer. Seeing there is no contact information, I’m now stuck.

I’m not one to complain, but it is a bit saddening that after 15 years of playing a franchise, I’m going to lose to a technicality. Will be returning the game tomorrow after a 13 hour session on my day off to figure this -Yoink- out. Thanks for the help Zippy.)

Seqma, Do you have the Hallo Wars 2 beta installed on your xbox? If you do delete it! That is causing your problems. If you don’t then no worries. I never did ask you this earlier so I hope this might help if you do have it installed on your xbox. If you do after you delete it do a hard reset start again to your xbox. I know you are over your post limits but hope you see this and hope this might be your cause. Cheers!

Hey Zippy,

I don’t have Halo Wars installed. I did another reinstall last night, and I’ve been trying again today. The game will still crash, with the logo having the pixelated/distorted frames, but sometimes going all the way (lol) to the 343 logo, and twice now to where the music starts and closer to the menu. Crashes still though.

This has to do with some update.

Seqma ive pulled all the tricks out of my hat that I know of… If your xbox is up to date on updates we know it isn’t your xbox. Another thing to make sure is when you power down your xbox make sure it just doesn’t just go to hibernate… The reason the game loads when you are off line is because you are using the game you have installed on your xbox. Once you go online you are connecting to a Dedicated Server that has the game installed. Which means your game on your xbox is just a key to let you in to play online. This isn’t like the old Halo games where we played P2P anymore. The game now is installed on servers around the world… Have you finally cleared up your NAT issues so it stays Open all the time? That has to be done or you will not be able to access the Dedicated Server properly. Something still tells me there is an issues with your NAT. You are correct by saying it may have to do with an update but if you cant log into the game online then im not sure you can obtain any current updates to the game. And let me tell you there has been plenty of updates! Again just to let you know out of all the Halo games or any game for that matter ive never had as much trouble as I have had with this game. Knowing now what I didn’t back then I would have not purchased this or touched it with a 10 foot pole. So believe me I understand your frustration. Again if you have any further questions feel free to ask. Good luck!!

Zippy.

I’m in the midst of a last reinstall, and I understand what you mean and have written.

I haven’t been able to access it offline either. That was a blue moon itself. I have made sure it isn’t just going into hibernation, because I have power cycled it to the extent of unplugging it completely as well.

As for NAT setting, I didn’t know it was going off of dedicated servers. I’ll check once I can get NAT open again, as that isn’t sticking either. Don’t know why.

Thanks again Zippy for your time.

Your NAT acts like a firewall. When you connect to the H5 server you need that Open. If you have a router that is where you have to go to Open your NAT. There is plenty of info on google on how too do that. If you happen to have gotten your router from your ISP they may have support on how to Open your NAT as well… What you have now is a floating NAT. Its Open when you sign into xbox live but the minute you load the game your NAT goes from Open to Moderate or even Strict… And that’s because you are leaving one server to another. Its called a hand off or a hand shake. If you still cant get this game to work post back here again and we can continue the quest for a fix… Keep the faith!! LOL

Its on open and its been consistent. I had changed the IP, port forwarded, and all that jazz since yesterday.

Regardless, it has been on Open and even after a hard reset. The game still refuses to start correctly.

sorry for barging in, but I was curious what you mean by this, I have the beta and Halo 5 has been booting me from every game I try to play, is HW2 the issue?

also, I am sorry to here about your issue OP, makes me feel bad about complaining about servers when your issue is far worse then mine. I hope you solve your problem!

This is a shame really. I cant think of anything else to try. I think we have covered everything under the sun thus far. Sad thing is it could be something so simple which we are just not doing or seeing. Whats so madding about this is there is no support for us from the developer. Which you think there would be. The way I understand it is 343i is a team set up by Microsoft to develop the game. So why is it when one calls Microsoft they say get a hold of the developer?? You would think they would be able to help in that matter since we are talking about one of the same or at least have contact info on the developer that works for Microsoft to get a hold of them. Major disconnect between Microsoft and developer 343i. You can try and call Microsoft again in some hopes you get someone with a better bit of knowledge on this matter. That is if you want to put more time into a game you still cant play. I guess my last ditch effort would be to call them again and explain there is no support for the game by the developer. And just maybe they will dig deeper into this for you. I know we are not the only people calling them so you would think someone there knows something to help trouble shoot this out for you. Let me know what happens if you will. Sorry it still hasn’t worked for you. It sure would of been fun to of joined up in a game for victory sakes.

Good luck my friend.

Down loading the Halo Wars 2 beta had cause problems for me and a few friends. And I see others on here as well that it has effected. Why does this not happen to everyone? Well that is a good question. But with a beta one really never can expect to much. If your problems are occurring after having the beta installed then its a good guess that is was the cause of the problem. Remember this may or may not be your cause. Was Halo5 working fine before the beta install? That is the question you have to ask yourself… I have one friend that currently is still playing the beta or as of two days ago was. But in that time he never did try to play H5. So if you have been having issues with Halo5 even before you downloaded the beta… well chances are that the beta isn’t the problem. Good luck! And I hope your issues can be resolved. Again I do feel bad for the Op as well… Such a shame he cant even try the game :-/

Alright, so an update till now.

I contacted Xbox Support last night and had quite a helpful individual talk to me. His idea, and he admitted that this was something weird (paraphrasing), was to address what he thought the issue was. The game was downloading and installing repeatedly to a corrupt file originally, a bad sector in the hard drive, and that was why further installs were not helping.

Remedy was to uninstall, restart console, install other games over the 80 or so gigs that were taken up by the Halo 5 install. Before this, we also tried;

Start Halo 5 without the disc in, put it in when prompted (Fail.)
Factory reset Xbox One but spare games and apps (Fail.)
Uninstall owned games and try to get to a portion of the hard drive where Halo 5 wouldn’t be installing over the previous section (Fail).

So, after all of these attempts to fix the situation, none of those worked. I took his recommendation, found a few Free to Play games, and installed roughly 60+ gigs onto the console. I installed Halo 5 afterward, started it up, and (Fail).

I had asked the Support individual what would be another option if none of this worked, and he said a console format. I just finished reformatting, reinstalling Halo 5, and I started it and so far it has crashed. I’m not considering it a fail yet, because I have not downloaded the 35 gig update, and won’t be able to do so till later today.

Hope to have some good news.

Ha.
