If you got the challenge to kill spartans with melee attacks in Attrition.
Be warned that atleast the hammer does not count towards the challenge at all. I suspect the sword doesn’t either.
And that it mainly concern their main trigger attack.
So, despite being literal melee weapons, at the very least their normal attack does not count towards a melee attack challenge.
