Pros vs cons list

PROS:

  • FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, A HALO RING TO EXPLORE. I loved CE for it’s open missions and I waited 20 years to see this expanded, when it was only barely touched on streets of mombasa and new alexandria, but instead of an ancient alien ringworld, they were random destroyed cities were you know how the narrative ends and that it has no impact or nothing to discover. This is the chaddest thing in the demo easily.
  • The gameplay, the sanbox. Throwing one of those exploding canisters, a hook that IS LIMITED mind you, jackals that activate or deactivate their shields, FLYING GRUNTS… They thought out of the box.
  • This isn’t in the demo but in the news post I saw things like the shield or the hook WON’T BE STARTING EQUIPMENT, you pick them up just like in H3 and probably this VERY LIKELY means sprint and bloom won’t be there by default.
  • This means also that most spartan abilities directly forming part of the player are gone.
  • Other awful mechanic from H5 thrown into trash is the AI squad that revives you a la COD and does everything for you.
  • They confirmed we’ll see more about multiplayer in the coming month.
  • No sign of palpatine cortana.
  • The plot seems dark, epic, desperate, and tied to the story of the rings and the factions we know.
  • Half of the art style (presentation, human, banished and forerunner architecture, natural landscapes, the uniform of the pilot).

CONS (I won’t act like a clown and put the H5 placeholder sfx or unfinished graphics)

  • The other half of the art style (the covenant although it’s better than H4 and 5, UNSC weapons, the warthog, chief’s armor is good but feels like fanservice to me)
  • The portrayal of the covenant in general, they seemed a bit too… cartoony to me, especially the brute at the end. RIP WORT WORT WORT.

For me that was it, I’m more than satisfied.

Cons:

Whats the story? Whats with Cortana? Do I have to read a book or a novel to know what happend?

I’m so dissapointed… 5 years of working… I should have to laugh but hell…

I thought there would be now an awesome gaeplay or an awesome teaser - it’s nothing special, more like an low budget thing…

One of my negatives was the sound of the Warthog’s engine. It just sounds like some Subaru or Honda with an aftermarket exhaust. The cartoony art-style was also a huge disappointment. Heck I think even the Halo 3 announcement and gameplay trailers had better graphics/art style and that was back in 2006/2007 for the 360.

That was literally the only part of the trailer that I liked: That they finally made a decent sounding warthog again after the lawnmower they had for the last few games.

Not a lot of people noticed this but there is also an armory area when they open up the map along with a database section. I debate with myself if upgrades to chief would be a pro or con but I like the database because if it’s going to be open world I think we are going to see a variety of new enemies possibly including the flood. With the armory if we do see upgrades then I would like to see possibly a higher difficulty as you power up chief just to keep it interesting. They can either add difficulties beyond legendary or add skulls on to certain regions which both could be really fun.

I noticed this too as I was pausing throughout my re-watch. I wonder how it’s going to be incorporated?
Armor, Weps, both? I hope it’s just armor because of how often a player picks up and drops weapons.
Will upgrades be necessary to get thru the game or just make it a little easier or more fun? I’m sure they’ll be tied to side-quests as is typical for open world games. Like you I hope it has some kind of a relation to higher difficulty.

I actually think it could be really interesting with weapons because assuming upgrades carry over to your weapon it might spice them up. I know a lot of people who are unhappy with how boring the weapons are but if they had a secondary ability to each. for example the assault rifle might have a shield on the front or the rocket launcher can send you flying up in the air before you shoot.

The only problem I had was that the graphics looked too cartoony. (they were rly crip tho)

I’ll start with the pros here for myself:

  1. the game looks buttery smooth, the combination of fluid character movement, and that silky 60fps was something I enjoyed about Halo 5, so Im ecstatic that it’s back for Infinite.
  2. the world seems lush, and vibrant. It definitely feels alien and at the same time, familiar.
  3. The Chief’s locomotion looks super weighty, yet frenetic. It looks like sprint, slide/evade/dodge is back, as is clamber. Those, to me, are some welcome additions/mainstays that I love. Smart scope, spartan charge and ground pound look to be gone, and it seems like there will be new ways of traversal. I noticed on the pause menu there was a tab labelled ‘UPGRADES’ so it may be safe to assume the Grapple hook might fall in this category.
  4. the weapons look weighty and the audio is chunky and crisp. Always love the MA37, so this new MA40 iteration is a sight to behold.
  5. I’ve gone back and forth on this, but seeing th Chief, in his “Iconic” armor, return in Infinite was special to see. The Covenant seems to have gone back to a blend of Halo Wars 2, and Halo 2; the Elites looks terrifyingly agile and tough. Whereas the Brutes look to appear as their name suggests… brutish and dangerous. So many things seem to be true to thier original form. I say a win on that front.

Now for the CONs:

  1. some of the Character models have a cartoonish feel. I kind of attribute this to the color vibrancy. Some of the colors need to be muted and washed out for a more cinematic grit. Because of the dynamic lighting-which looks amazing- some of the colors seem to pop more than the should, in my opinion. It maybe because of the lighting; I’m not sure if its true, but I heard/read that there may be day-night cycles. So the lighting may have caught some of the in game models in the wrong light.
  2. Other than the MA40(love it) the weapons feel chunky and uninspired/original. The plasma burst repeater thing looks like it started with a cool design, but they kinda ended the development. Almost as if the model wasnt quite finished with the details.
  3. The Banished seem like an afterthought as the main antagonist. People complained about the Prometheans so much, so I feel like 343I just fell back on the “old familiar,” instead of developing their original idea to be more engaging. I hate to use the term, as it’s used too often, but it does feel like a bit of 'fan service", for lack of a better term.
  4. the grapplehook looks like a very effective tool for the campaign…but only for the campaign. Having this mechanic in multiplayer would, for me at least, feel and play too much like Infinite Warfare, or Titanfall 2, or Apex Legends. On that topic, it looks as if equipment is back; such drop shields but I’m concerned that these would feel somewhat of a gimmick to just appease part of the community. Not something I’d use regularly myself, but it is another option for player with a more strategic mind. Just not for myself.

In conclusion, these are just some nitpicky things I had in my first look at the game. Overall I’m excited for the game, and look forward to the Multiplayer reveal, as well as the game’s launch.

I’m a classic Halo gamer and I liked what I saw. Yes, there was texture problems and maybe the graphics aren’t what people were expecting but I heard Major Nelson on the RDX podcast that most of the games shown today were in various stages of development, perhaps this demo was from a slightly older build? I like that we didn’t see ground pound and thrusters. I can live with the grappling hook since it will be a pick up weapon in multiplayer.
