Pros and Cons of the Halo 2 Battle Rifle in Reach/CEA

1st and foremost this is not a complaint thread. When it comes to the DMR, I don’t love it or hate it…I am okay with it, but I really miss the Halo 2 BR. With the title update coming and the updated classic playlist coming, I was thinking about the sandbox and how great it would have been if the Halo 2 BR could have been balanced against the AR instead of SMGs as the starting weapon.

Pros -

  1. Since the DMR is already hitscan, it wouldn’t take a radical code change to bring it back.
  2. The Reach AR would do a better job of stacking up against it that either SMG or the H3 AR.
  3. Same goes with power weapons.
  4. It would end bloom complaints.
  5. The pistol would still out gun the BR close range, adding variety.

Cons -

  1. People that somehow think the DMR is overpowered might have a stroke.
  2. They would have to be forged in.
  3. It would discourage NR usage, which would be a shame.
  4. Movement/Strafe speed would HAVE to be increased (I consider that a good thing though).

Thoughts? Opinions?

though i think adding the BR back into halo would be awesome, i think its a little more complicated than that, im not sure, and sincce the BR wasnt IN Halo CEA, it probably wont be in the update.

While it would be fun to try the BR vs the AR in reach, and I’d love having not one but 2 long range UNSC psuedo-sniper rifles (/sarcasm), the BR addition would not end bloom complaints. The BR would have to have its own bloom, and would be somewhere between the DMR’s and AR’s bloom extremecy.

I gotta be honest, I am not sure I follow you regarding the bloom thing. The Halo 2 BR didn’t have bloom. It had a miniscule amount of spread…less than the Halo 3 BR, and if I remember correctly it was coded as such that if one bullet hit, they all hit…which is why it was so powerful.

As for the people in the camp that thinks every engagement should be CQB; they won’t be happy, but all the regular playlists would play like Reach still.

Oh, you mean Halo 2 like No-bloom. Doesn’t work like that. Welcome to Reach, we haz bloom here.

While I have no coding experience at all, I think that it may be pretty complicated to add new weapons to the game (although Bioware did it with MAss Effect 2). That said, I would love having all the old weapons back in forge/customs. Brute Shot anybody?

Really? Because this is the first I have heard of any bloom in Reach. Interesting…to reiterate: with the title update and pending release of CEA, 343i is telling us to anticipate a “Classic” (like the old stuff) playlist. Well the two most “classic” things that most people point to when talking about past games are weapons and maps. Of the weapons, the CE pistol is the runaway winner followed by the BR…the one without the bloom.

Or the sentinel beam! and in terms of vehicles, the Spectre!

We already have a “Classic” playlist. Its Team Classic, under the Community heading. And why would they re-write a massive part of the game in the TU for one playlist? And why would they do that for the WHOLE GAME? its a rediculous notion. They could bring back the Battle Rifle, but it’d have to have bloom. Bloom wouldn’t affect it that much, anyway, a 3-round burst from an AR is pretty accurate. So unless you spam it (like everyone seems to do with every weapon in the game anyway) you’ll be fine with bloom.

First of all, my OP said with the TU and tweaking of the CLASSIC PLAYLIST…so don’t fret about me taking away your ability to spam in regular team slayer. I am talking about the H2 BR in Team Classic playlists only.

Second, you spelled “ridiculous” wrong.

Third, the whole TU and Halo CEA release is based around as Frankie put it, “the more simple elegant” ie CLASSIC experience. I don’t think you can write off tweaking/removing bloom as some hare-brained idea when even mods on this site are dropping hints that changes regarding fundamental game mechanics (cough* bloom) are coming.

Bloom on the precision midrange weapon that, like it or not, has become the utility weapon of choice for a huge chunk of players is the most radical change to the series with the exception of armor abilities.

Why are you so adamant about the classic playlist keeping bloom? Are choices that bad?

Honestly, I want to see this just for the aesthetics. I’m thinking have the bullets spread more and more with each shot in the burst, but have the bloom completely reset before you can even fire the weapon again. It would be awesome if the bloom on it worked like it does with the AR- with no real performance modifications, just for aesthetic purposes.

Also, this will probably never happen. As it has been discussed over and over on B.net, it is most likely VERY difficult to add items to the existing game.
