Prophet's Bane

So for all those who watched HaloFest we got to see a glimpse of the Halo 5: Beta. Now from what I saw, it looks super exciting and very intense. And yes, ADS is now a part of Halo, but in actually fact it’s been a part of Halo since the beginning. Just this time we get an animation as well which is super cool! I like the balancing of being able to sprint forever but not recharging shields whilst sprinting, it’s going to balance the game out really well. So far my only complaint is the Energy Sword.

A new type of Energy Sword appears to have made it’s way into Halo. And it’s awesome…in a way. I love the gameplay mechanics that come with it, what I don’t like is it’s inability to aesthetically please me. Every Energy Sword created in the Halo Universe had made me say “Wow, that’s beautiful!” But this one made me think “What? Is that really the next design of Energy Sword, they went from gorgeous to super ugly in 1 game (2 if you count the MCC).” Now I know it’s early days so I’m hoping 343i will change the way it looks before the final release, but right now it saddens me deep down. Especially as it’s more powerful than the common Energy Sword we see in previous Halo’s which leads me to believe that it should be even more aesthetically pleasing.

They could have both. Tell me, since I didn’t watch the whole gameplay, is the Prophet’s Bane different from the energy sword in a significant way?

It looks like a glowing poopdagger.

They could, that is true. But if you’re going to implement a stronger version of the sword you might as well make it beautiful…Am I right?

I think that they would benefit from a different design, more like a katana or a better/more sleek and sharp looking design.

The Prophet’s Bane is The Arbiters energy sword.

I’ll link the source below but here is the bit I mean.

"Thel generally wears the ceremonial armor style worn by other Arbiters who served before him, though more recently he has taken to donning a bespoke ceremonial battledress that both pays homage to the Arbiters of the past and represents a transition forward towards his vision of a united Sangheilios. His weapon of choice is the Energy Sword, including the occasional use of his personal blade which carries the sobriquet “Prophets’ Bane”.

Thanks for that, I didn’t realise it was Arby’s!

Just because it’s Arby’s sword doesn’t make it nice to look at. That thing needs a redesign badly.

Agreed. I don’t know why 343 has such a hard time with the Covenants art direction, that sword is just unsightly.

I can’t find the image… or the spot in the video… help a brother out?

This video shows it a bit in the beginning.

From the energy sword Universe page:

“Variation in the weapon itself can be expressed in both the shape and the color of the blade. A blade’s contours can have either smooth curves or elegant angles, and while most energy swords glow with a blue tint, Sangheili special forces have been known to wield blades that blaze red.”

I think it’s worth taking into account the Arbiter’s own redesign. It’s likely that Prophet’s Bane is supposed to fit with his new armour.

Love or hate what they’ve shown us so far, you can’t argue that Prophet’s Bane is the best name for a weapon in a game since BFG

Why didn’t the Arbiter’s sword have a cool, ceremonial handle like this? Why didn’t they give it its own unique colour like this?

There’s literally hundreds of more inventive things they could have done with the Energy sword to give it a cool makeover. Instead they resort to making it look fat.

It has its own unique colour. The medals show us that the regular energy swords are blue. The Universe section tells us that many Spec Ops Elites use red, so if they went for that it wouldn’t exactly be unique.

In fact, I’d wager that because it’s the arbiter’s sword it requires a redesign. We can’t have one of the coolest aliens around walking with this thing strapped to his side, right? I’m sure this sword would look aesthetically pleasing in some sort of other context, just not the context of Halo. It seems very underwhelming when stacked against the normal energy sword.

Thanks for the link.

I don’t get it. It’s a slightly different curve, but still looks completely ‘feasible’ to me. I mean, this is the nit we pick?

And, yes:

Nice to see some poetry makings its way back into the franchise.

Y’know, I hated it at first, but the design is growing on me. The Prophet’s Bane is the symbol of the leader of the Swords of Sanghelios. It’s what you get through your chest if you cross the Arbiter. This isn’t some flimsy katana-style decorative piece.

That arby sword is -Yoink!-, homie.

Looking at the extreme redesign, and that name “The prophet’s bane”, makes me think that this is a map specific weapon. I’d go as far as to say that every multiplayer map comes with a named power weapon, the “exotic” (destiny bump) on the map. It probably encourages map flow a lot, as it is THE WEAPON on the map.
