Proper third person reload animation?

Now, this mighty be nit-picky, but it sill annoys me. There almost never seems to be a proper 3rd person reload animation, where the character actually removes a magazine, and then puts in a new one in modern shooters.

And i honestly think Halo 5 as a next-gen game should have this proper 3rd person animation.
Just add an animation where the character actually reloads the gun instead of awkwardly punching that part of the gun where the magazine is located.

I’m hoping they make lots of improvements to the character animations in H5. The progression since CE in animation improvement has been solid, so I’m going to guess that some things like reloading will become more realistic when viewed third-person.

This isn’t that nit-picky at all. If anything, It’s a reasonable request.

The Third person animations have always been a little off. The exceptions to these are Assassinations and Abilities.

I hope 343 improves them for Halo 5 Guardians. It would most certainly be a nice touch.

For Halo 5, I’m expecting realistic animations with an attention for details. Perhaps something going for Far Cry 3 realism. By now we should see realistic reload, weapon swap, vehicle flip and melee animations. It’s 2014 and we’re on the next generation of consoles.

I remember Bungie talking about the Grenade Throw animation a while back.

The gameplay guys want in to occur quickly, for gameplay reasons, in three frames.

The art guys want it to occur slowly in more detail, for aesthetic reasons, in seven frames.

They settled on five frames.

My point is that there is always a balance between aesthetics and gameplay and both sides makes concessions.

What do you call this then?

I noticed you said “almost never”, but still, it exists, which means they’ve thought about it, which means we’ll probably see more of it. It’s evidence of progression.

I actually went to Halo 4 to see which weapons had this sort of animation, and at least 7 of the weapons had an animation where the mag was removed and a new one was put in.

Good, this shows that future Halo games might have proper 3rd person reloading animations for all weapons.

Hooray! Glad I could help.

While some of them do show the removal and replacement of a magazine they still tend to miss some other animations.

One being that there is no apparent ejection port on most of the rifles, and even those that do have no cycling animation in 3rd person.

Another is in 1st person when reloading you see your character cycle the bolt to chamber a cartridge but in 3rd person this isn’t shown. Also when firing in 1st person you’ll see the charging handle reciprocate when firing but not in 3rd person.

Totally agree, OP. We are long overdue for some variety in the character animations.

Running, jumping, crawling, crouching, reloading, pistol whipping… heck, even standing still… all these things could use some variety. Show me a Spartan bracing his knees when landing off a man cannon. Or walking/running differently depending on the terrain.

Know how the Elites evaded in Reach? Awesome animation, but no real impact on the players POV? That kind of thing. Of course, none of it should hamper gameplay… but given the new hardware and new engine, I sincerely hope 343 is pursuing these kinds of things. Let’s give Chief a little athletic flair.

That was why there was no impact in 1st person when rolling, it was found to be way to disorienting so they removed it for gameplay purposes.

Locked at OP’s request.
