I just want someone to clarify something for me. From what I know, Forerunners are not humans, but they are closely related. Prometheans are humans that have been composed by the Forerunners. My friend says that Forerunners ARE humans, which I’m pretty sure is wrong. Can someone just clarify the relation and maybe give me some extra details, that’d be awesome!
Your friend is running off the heavy hints from halo 3 that they were one and the same, even though h3’s terminals suggested otherwise. Humanity and Forerunners being one and the same seems to be something bungie was divided on. 343 chose a direction.
It’s important to note that some Promethean Knights are also composed Forerunners.
Forerunners are a different species… like the Didact and Librarian in halo 4.
Prometheans are the elite most faction of the warrior-servants, the military cast of the forerunners, lead by the Ur-Didact. The promethean knights were originally forerunner composed and placed into the shells, then they were composed humans.
Ok. If you want to read the books, DO NOT READ THIS MAJOR SPOILERS. Basically the Forerunners were made by the Precursors, as were every other spicies I believe (Includijg humans). Over 100,000 years ago there were multiple races of humans varying in skin color and shape while all retaining their basic human form. The Forerunners had a war with the humans because (WARNING SPOILERS ON HALO 4 TERMINALS AHEAD) the humans were attacking Forerunner worlds (these were ancient hunans that existed 100,000 years ago.) The Forerunners thought the humans were attempting territorial expansion, they were not rather they were running from the flood. (Some Forerunner worlds were infected and humans knew what the flood did before the Forerunners, so in an effort to contain the infestation the ancient humans were essientially glassing Forerunner planets) The war between the Forerunners and the humans ended with the Forerunners winning, af a cost. They were weakened from their conflict and were no match for the Flood. I hope this helps.
Guilty spark literally said that the MC was forerunner and humanity is regarded as the inheritors of the mantle and all of the forerunners left behind. The close relation between forerunners and humans could be attributed to the idea that both species were created by the precursors. Im not sure if this last bit is actual lore or it was just a theory in one of the books.

The only reason that the Forerunners and Humanity are linked is because of some really stupid plot decisions by 343i that, in the far distant past, Humanity had a star empire of equal technological standing as the Forerunners, and the two species fought each other with the Forerunners eventually winning and reducing Humanity back to the stone age. A very powerful Foreunner, the Librarian, essentially had a crush on the main Human leader during the war and once it was clear that the Forerunners were going to lose to the Flood, decided to go in and change Human genetics to be able to have a natural understanding of Forerunner technology, along with the ability to easily use it. This was done with the intent of making amends for what the Forerunners did to Ancient Humanity, and to ensure that the Forerunner legacy was not entirely lost, thus making Humanity the ‘Reclaimers’.
