From the released campaign footage, the Promethean enemies look like intimidating and formidable foes. However, I just can’t take the name “Promethean” seriously. For one, it sounds like Prothean, one of the Mass Effect pre-human civilization races analogous to the Forerunners, wiped out by the Halo r- err, Reapers. As someone who has played all the Mass Effect games thoroughly, the name will always prime images of the Protheans. The name is also reminiscent of the movie “Prometheus.”
I haven’t followed the Halo lore in the recent novella, but there is undoubtedly going to be more explanation on why the enemies are called Prometheans. The name could possibly come from the Greek God Prometheus, progenitor of man. I’m not sure.

Ironic how Prometheus created man and the Forerunners wanted to wipe them out.
First thing I thought of when I heard “promethean” was the legend of Prometheus.
However, I can see people thinking of Mass Effect’s Protheans when talking about Halo 4’s Prometheans. There’s at least 1 video from Machinima.com in which a person keeps referring to the Prometheans and Protheans.

They didn’t want to wipe man out. That went against their philosophy of upholding the Mantle. It was just after the whole Halo array Halo’ing most of the Forerunners that the really jerkface Forerunners were left to mess with humanity. Though I’m sure there are some good ones left.

Perhaps not wipe us out, but they disliked us. A lot. Especially after the war.
I think it’s a good name, though I have seen (or heard) a lot of people getting Promethean and Prothean confused (someone saying “Prothean Vision” in one of the more recent gameplay videos for example). My friend gets Forerunners and Protheans confused a lot.
I think of Prometheus from Greek myth first and second of his use in western culture as a symbol of Scientific progress, and the unforseen consequences those advances or simply the pursuit of them can cause.
> The promethean enemy class does not intimidate me at all i wish they would have just kept the flood in.
Awesome looking new enemy class that adds a whole new diversity?
Or a boring parasite that has been beaten to death which adds no gameplay diversity?
I know what I prefer…
However I like the name, and also thought of the Prometheus legend

Great, now I’m going to be confused, thinking of all those Prothean beacons infusing Shepard with Prothean visions…
