So…why are they called prometheans? Why not a different name? Prometheans 100,000 years ago were forerunner warriors…but still forerunners. So why do these things that clearly AREN’T forerunners but rather artificial constructs, have the same name?
I really hope this is explained in the game. If they just go forth with the name with no explanation I’m…bah.
I’m not super educated in Halo lore, but from what I understand, the Prometheans are a Forerunner class that are still alive (Forerunners are extinct at the time of Halo 4).
Someone who is more educated is more than welcome to correct me on this, however.
I am arguably super educated, and I know what prometheans are, at least the original ones from the forerunner novels. My question is why the ones in the games seemingly have jack all to with the ones in the book. The only thing they seem to share is the name and their forerunner heritage.

That’s what they want you to think…
Theres something in the books that could explain this. In Halo Primordium, a machine called the Composer is revealed and detailed. The Composer extracts your mind, your being, from your body and archives it. Your mind can then be uploaded to a mechanical interface or inserted into the being of another living being granting the being your knowlege and experience. I think after The Didact fired the Halo arrays he used the composer to archive any remaining Prometheans that were willing. Now the crawlers and the watchers may be regular automated units like sentinels but the knights may contain the minds of actual forerunners.
I am just guessing and just recently finish both Cryptum and Primordium. Maybe these AIs are machines that were programmed to fight with Prometheans or at least serve them. These AIs are, after all, warriors (to a sense). Also, this kinda helps reinforce the theories that the Didact, or at least a Promethean, is a or THE threat. Though that would then raise the question, why not call a War Sphinx a Promethean Sphinx?
SPOILERS
Now that I think about, remember “The Composer.” It was able to transfer minds of living things (such as Humans or Forerunners) into machines (mainly monitors). Maybe the Prometheans transferred their minds into those machines we see. There would be advantages to doing this (Flood immunity and withstanding the Halo firing). And the Didact… support keeps coming into light suggesting he’s “alive.”
That’s certainly a possibility. It kind of saddens me that these 12ft+ tall powerful warriors are now these little artificial midgets in armor. And seemingly mindless. Bleh. They’re a disgrace to real prometheans.
There are certianly disadvantages to uploading a living being into a mechanical interface. They could easily loose thier mind and certian mental function. 343 Guilty Spark was once a human. See how he turned out after 100 thousand years. Their mindlessness could be attributed to mental decay. They may still have their loyalty but perhaps not thier higher social or mental skills. Btw Guilty Spark may return. The UNSC discovered his badly damaged remains, he was barely active but he’s probably going to make a return.
Well, can’t forerunner somehow put their minds into technology? Technology lasts a long time bro. It was never said that they were Prometheans. Just AIs, made by Prometheans.

Just so you know, the books aren’t official cannon.
Bungie has already explained this when there was confusion on Halo: Reach where supposedly, Dr. Halsey was not supposed to know there were Spartan 3’s yet, but in Reach, she does know.

Jus so you know the newest novels are official canon. They tie directly into Halo 4 without contradicting it. Bungie also said that Reach wasn’t meant to be canon.
