Since the E3 campaign footage we have seen prometheans with blue glowing lights and, more often, ones with orange lighting.
I first thought that these were different “classes” of prometheans, but I just had a realization while watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw83PPboYKE&feature=player_embedded
The colors simply depend on the time of day. In any night-time scene, it appears that all of the prometheans glow blue rather displaying the orange light they emit during the day.
Of course none of this is very important, it’s simply an observation that I haven’t seen anyone else point out before.
Thanks for reading!

O.O i thought this, but when i said it too my self it sounded stupid, but for some reason it makes sense now that some one else said it, well done good sir well done, although this gives us more questions than answers
Yeah, it would be really cool if promethean weapons glowed different colors in your hands based on the time of day. I’m excited for all these little features that 343i has added to the game. Even though they don’t effect gameplay, they help the game have a more “polished” feel and shows that a lot of heart was put into every aspect.

No, it’s their allegiance or something like that. That’s what I believe.

But both attack Chief, lol.
If they’re both attacking Chief, they’re like, the same allegiance in his opinion.

I thought the same thing. It looks like they change they’re color to not stick out like a sore thumb. I can see this being implemented into the multiplier for weapons, blue on darker maps and orange on brighter ones so that you’re not so easily spotted.
I would have agreed with you, OP, but if you pause the video during the scene that begins at 2:08(during the scene where MC uses the Hardlight Shield which has a cool looking HUD icon, btw), there appears to be a group of blue Prometheans with one orange Watcher in the back. I start the video 3 seconds early to give you time to get your pause ready.
I’m thinking color means strength of the Promethean.
Wait, they may change due to the day and night cycle?
That’s insane!

Yeah, I pointed this out last night but everyone ignored it. I too think it may simply denote the “power” of the Prometheans, with blues being slightly stronger than oranges – otherwise that clip was just a glitch/bug and they simply change according to time of day.
I like this! I originally thought it would change depending on their strengths and weaknesses.
It could be possible that the normal class of Prometheans change based on the time of day, but the stronger ones stay the same, for more of an intimidating look, and to draw fire from the lower ranked Prometheans.
I think it’s just for their rank. As in minor=blue, major=red, like most Halo enemies.
It would be awesome if this happened with Promethean weapons too.
I was thinking the orange ones are the didact’s and the blue ones the Liberian’s they fight each other and chief and the covies :S
It’s not their alliegence, it is based on whether it is night or day. As you can see in the video when the spartan uses the hardlight shield the shield is blue, but in other videos where it is day-light it is orange. It’s the hardlight technology, it’s still as powerful as if it was in the day-time as it is in night, but the colors change
Well it wouldn’t make sense to fight a bright orange enemy during night… seems kinda disadvantageous for them.

Good eye, but I’m going to have to disagree with you. It looks to me like there is some kind of lava pit below that watcher and it is simply reflecting the orange from the lava. I may be wrong…who knows? I just would find it very strange that only at night do you fight a certain class of prometheans and only during the day do you fight the other class when they look EXACTLY the same other than color.

PS: You can see a bit of an orange glow on the rock wall as well.
