Progression

I’m not expecting anything to come of this, I would just like to add my voice to the Halo community.

Halo is a game that I adore and I’ve sunk years of my life into it since childhood. Halo 5 is one of my most played games on Xbox One and while I really enjoyed the multiplayer arena, I didn’t love the way we unlock different gear and armour sets. I remember playing Halo Reach with my friends in high school and we would compete against each other to save up and unlock the different sets of armour. Halo 3, me and my friends would play hour after hour working together to unlock every achievement so we could have that sweet sweet katana for our multiplayer characters. Halo 5… I unlock armour completely out of luck. Having a cool looking spartan in Halo 5 means nothing. I would love for Halo Infinite to bring back a way to unlock armour through actual progression and not luck based.

What do you think?

You’re not alone. I’d be surprised (and really disappointed) if 5’s unlock system made it into Infinite.

With all the backlash with H5 they have to resort to the old unlock system. Although i wouldnt put it past them to mess it up again.

Don’t think we should be resorting to anything old, making new and better systems is always the better option. H5 system isn’t very fun, I’d also like to see armour unlocked through a progression system

Honestly should just be a combination of 4’s and 5’s where you can unlock basic and common things from packs and unlock the most valuable items like legendaries, from commendations

Whatever sells the most loot boxes is what we will get.

So the return of REQ Packs? Yeah, no thanks.

Exactly the opposite. All I want is meaningful unlocks

They’re probably gonna develop some sort of loot $ system sadly. Like reqs. But yeah the Halo 5 way I really didn’t enjoy. Armor through progression and achievement is much better imo, feels more special. But that $

I’d rather not have the grind or Reach or Halo 5 to be honest.

I’m of the mind that as far as cosmetics are concerned, getting what you want should be relatively easy. Collecting them all is the only thing that should be grind. Getting what you want shouldn’t be tied to the luck of the draw whether your favorite armor is a low level unlock or you get stuck with a long grind because the armor you like happens to be a higher level one.

Barring a few achievement based pieces, every type of unlock should “cost” the same as a unlock of the same class. All helmets cost the same as other helmets, chest pieces cost the same as other chest pieces, etc, etc. Getting every last unlock should take a while, but if you are the type who wants exactly one thing, it shouldn’t be a chore to get it.

And this should go without saying, but no random unlocks, ever. Lootboxes are a god awful system for “progression” cosmetic or otherwise.

That reply was directed to another user. Notice how even out of context, it contradicts my original response?

To be honest, I’d ideally want a challenge based unlock system than a progression based one. Grinding hours upon hours for imaginary points to unlock the item you want is only marginally more interesting than grinding hours upon hours for imaginary points to be deposited into a slot machine. The optimal way of unlocking items in a game is have the unlocks be based on completing interesting tasks (e.g., having to kill 100 of certain enemy type is not very interesting, but completing a level without doing any damage can be).

We kind of already have the system in place for this in terms of achievements, and Halo 3 essentially did it by tying armor to achivements (which is why I think it had the best system to date). However, this can obviously be improved upon, since the Halo 3 system wasn’t very extensive with only a few different pieces of armor. With more pieces of armor there’d be more room to do, for example, armor that requires great skill to unlock, or armor that requires the player to experience the game in a totally new way.

Of course yeah sorry I didn’t see that

The system in Halo 5 was there because it allowed all the map packs and additional content to be free, therefore keeping the player base together. I think we all would enjoy a progression system based on time, effort, and even specific tasks, but I just do not see that happening. The best thing we will get is a mixture of Halo 5’s req system and something else. I do think they can make a good mixture and have items that require specific tasks to get. As someone above mentioned, I loved getting the hayabusa and recon armor in Halo 3. It was difficult and took some time, but it was worth it! I also want my weapons and vehicles to be custom with skins or my gamertag.
