Progression System

Okay so a lot of people have been saying they would really like to see the old 1-50 ranking system come back in Halo 4. I think most of us would agree that the system in Reach wasn’t very enjoyable and the community has made that pretty clear. With the announcement of Spartan Points some members of the community have just automatically assumed that Halo 4 will be using a similar progression system to the credits from Reach. As a result the forum has had an outstanding number of threads concerning the pleads and whining for the 1-50 ranking system to return.

Well until just recently I didn’t really think much of it other then the fact that the clutter on the forums was getting a bit annoying. Earlier I watched the Game Informer Multiplayer interview with Brad Welch from 343i and Brad said something that I hadn’t noticed right away. He began talking about Spartan Points briefly and I kind of just shrugged the topic off for the moment when he said

“As you rank up you earn EXP for playing” “Each time you rank up you earn Spartan Points to customize loadouts”

Is this phrase just exactly what it sounds like? It seems like the new progression system being placed in Halo 4 will be a mix of the past two systems.

You play and gain EXP
You Rank up and get to have a number/rank next to your name
Each time you rank up you receive Spartan Points which can be used to purchase features for your customization. (Loadouts/Armor/AAs)

It seems like a pretty solid system except for one thing that was left unsaid. Is there a penalty for playing badly? Can you lose EXP and rank down, or do you just get lower amount for losing a match? For now that’s unclear, but I think it’s highly possible that this system could be used in a Ranked playlist if a separate ranking is used in each playlist. The Ranked playlists could feature The same system, only including an EXP loss Penalty for losing a match.

Game Informer Interview

This is pretty much what i’ve been thinking from the start. So far it’s all been assumptions that a progressive system automatically means it’s a carbon copy of Reach or Call of Duty. Who says you can’t keep skill, points, and experience separate?

> I think most of us

Define ‘most.’

If you mean most posters on the forums here, how do you account for the fact that your population is far dwarfed by those that play the game.

I think you’re missing the point.
And I use the word “us” pretty loosely considering the fact that My post count of 1 doesn’t really lump me with the rest of the forum posters.

Hmmm you might be onto something

There were aspects of both systems that I enjoyed. If they are making a solid hybrid of the two, then I am content!

Yes but I liked the H3 style alot more and hoping it would lean on, that more, then Reach’s.

Only time will tell …

I believe that I can live with a system like this only if the game play in Halo 4 is very solid!

I don’t think anything from Reach was enjoyable…
