Progression Improvements

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been finding it increasingly more and more difficult to commit to playing Halo 5 for more than a couple games every few days. I have a feeling this has to do with the game’s less than stellar progression system, where the only reward for playing is a glorified slot machine that is known as the req system. What happened to daily, weekly, and monthly challenges? If you ask me that would have been an easy way for 343 to answer criticism by pointing to challenges that could give players a generous way of earning req points outside of grinding warzone matches. And since I don’t play warzone anymore, the amount of unlocks I earn vs time spent playing is pathetically small.

The easiest way to fix this issue is obviously give better rewards for leveling up besides a random req pack that gives you 17 different scout warthogs. How should 343 approach game progression moving forward?

My opinion: A combination of level exclusive unlocks (these would be the weapons and vehicles for warzone) and a req store where people can individually select what customization items they want instead of it all being random. And in addition, a few premium items accessed only through completing achievements like H3’s vidmaster challenges.

Interested in other suggestions, constructive criticism is always better for halo rather than blind hate/love.

The Department of Redundancy Department would like a word with you

You say “the only reward for playing”, but don’t forget the fun of playing is already its own reward…But yes I see your point. A good progression system can add a lot to the fun of playing. Personally, I have all the permanent unlocks from the req pool and I still play for the fun.

But I remember my time before I had everything unlocked. The grind through silver packs was especially grueling. And I feel bad for the people who start playing Halo 5 thinking “I want to go and earn my Mark IV armor right away!” They are pretty much out of luck.

I agree, I miss those challenges. And even if you don’t need more req points, they still add variety to the gameplay and offer something extra to do.

Look I know your point is that req packs have useless junk, but actually, I would love a req pack that gave me that many scout hogs. You won’t appreciate their usefulness until you play firefight, but I would honestly trade all of my Nornfangs and Prophet’s Banes for 17 scout hogs. Sorry I couldn’t help pointing that out.

As much as I hate the idea of making things that give players an advantage during gameplay only available after reaching a certain level, I’d say this would be an improvement over the current system. Of course, if they added this store for armor unlocks, everybody would skip unlocking garbage like Seeker and Tracer and save all their points for better-looking sets like Helljumper. I think it would be interesting to see more players wearing outfits that actually reflect their taste.

I am tempted to suggest also adding weapon and vehicle certifications to this proposed req store, making it so players could buy or not buy, and sell them. And that sounds wonderful but I’d imagine we’d get people certifying themselves for nothing but Phaeton Helioses or something which could throw off whatever semblance of balance Warzone had to begin with. Not that I care…

Im down for being able to choose what I wear. If that means less armor sets, Im cool with that too, cause it means we dont get to see Seeker.

I completely agree. It’s better to have quality over quantity. This is another reason why I hope the req system doesn’t come back

At least not in its current form. Having it for single-use REQs, Im totally fine with. I dont mind that.
Having it for armor too, no. Give me control over what I get.

For many people though, it’s great to do good in a match, but we only care to do good in the match because you should be rewarded for that outstanding game you just had or at least know that if you continue to play like that you’re going to be rewarded with something you really want in the near future.
Halo 5 drastically fails at providing material for a sense of accomplishment. I just played oddball and made 133 of the 200 points to win and With 12 ball kills which is pretty good coming back into the game after virtually never playing it and still after doing really good I was like "well that was cool, but it’s still literally getting me nowhere in progression because the req system doesn’t work.
leveling in halo 5 is absolutely pointless, and on top of that there’s no over arching social rank to show off, and social playlists even though oddball can be competitive, rewards you with the lowest amount of req points than arena and war zone.
Halo 5 fails to center around the consistent dopamine rush of the player. It designed what I think is also a bit a so great multiplayer and so much focus on that, that it couldnt possibly have the time or resources with a deadline to create any kind of self to self player interaction. So In the end they ushered in a sloppy progression system and a terrible customization system to fill that empty void and on top of it, further soiled the perpous of those systems “player reward, benefit, bragging rights” with paywall or a middle man between the content we’ve already paid for and us. They watered down the enjoyment of unlocking those things our selves. And maybe it wouldn’t be a problem if we had never had these things, but we know that there are better, more fun systems that have existed in halo that didn’t make want to rip my hair out and cave to spend money because I want Emile’s armor because I know, no matter how good I do or want goal I accomplish, I have no control over when I’ll get it. It’s all just a garbage dumpster fire
