Only in Halo 2 did he actually receive character beyond “that black guy we see occasionally and who gets killed with Keyes”.
He’s definitely dead, unless somehow his corpse that slides off a balcony into a hole on an exploding ring doesn’t ensure his death.

There is a reason, but it’s as far from reasonable and logical as it gets.
Haha, he’s alive and well, it all makes perfect sense.
First of all, he did not die, he just fainted. then Master Chief carried him to the Hog after he’s cleared out all enemies and to make sure he was safe, Johson used an active camo. He was with chief when he made the jump, and crawled up inside another cryo pod while chief was dodging that tank.

Truth to be told, I would love to see the good old Johnson back, but maybe just as a ghost/hologram/memory flashes/, he is after all the most bad blam! character in Halo, he kicks at least as much blam! as chief, but without armor or augs.

Sure, but not as much as Cheif or true spartans, maybe I should have phrased that part better ^^
Still, he could come back as a pure and natural human, a clone stored in teh spirit of fire in case the real Johnson went MIA. you see, I can come up with any number of unlikely but still plausible explanations for having Johnson in Halo 4 
Maybe he even got some new super-aug from Halsey/UNSC that allowed him to regenerate, big time…
Johnson went into custom game and changed settings on abilities to unlimited and used armor lock whilt\e the explosion blasted him onto the planet. Completely, logic.
