I am a big fan in forge in halo reach/ halo 4. I was thinking that with the new halo being next-gen only it would be great to have a forge world that is procedurally generated. Of coarse there would still be regular forge worlds, but something along the lines of an island generator where each island is created with an algorithm would be a true next-gen step that would add huge potential to forge. This would allow for significantly more replay options. With the current number of forge worlds, open levels with two bases like Ragnarok and blood gulch have limited potential. There are only so many places you can put opposing bases, even in the large maps like Forge World. This way, hundreds of new, exciting levels could be created for CTF and other base-to-base fights. I know there might be some technical limitations (saving the new maps would take a lot of space), and the generated worlds wouldn’t be as good looking as the hand built ones, but I think this would add some new life the forge and would energize the community.
Tell me what you think in the comments, and if you are from 343 maybe give it some thought
That seems like it would be extremely difficult to do correctly, and probably wouldn’t be worth the time and effort it takes to put it in.
These ideas work with games like Minecraft, since the world is created from a small selection of identical blocks. Having realistic and beautiful graphics isn’t the main concern of those games, since they have a unique artstyle that works for them. Since Halo is not built around that particular artstyle, having procedurally generated worlds that actually look good would be next to impossible.
Though I could be wrong with this, and it would certainly be interesting.
The only way I could see this working is if it only changed the landscape. Vis a Vis hills, canyons, cliff sides and rock placement. There are just so many different items that can be placed in forge, I don’t see how it would work. Not to mention you can’t just put random items in random spots. Things would be falling over and it would just look weird.
Like the guy above said, minecraft can do it because of the limited amount of blocks that are being used and technically those blocks even have a set pattern.
It’s not a bad concept, I just don’t see how 343i would pull it off.
I think a proper map editor would be a lot simpler.
Apart from technical limitations(which there are many beyond system capabilities) it’s a massive waste when a full scale editor could provide what players really want without the fuss. In your mind it sounds cool, but it’s something that would take months of development and would ultimately be a “that’s nice” hour long feature that most players will never use again.
That would be technically impossible from a graphical standpoint. If they were to do that, graphics would have to drop, which I doubt they’re willing to do.
A full-scale editor would more likely fulfill the job without making the console explode.
This would be a good feature to have if Forge was primarily about exploration, but it isn’t. A world editor would just be better.
World editor would be good enough for me.
I do think that an algorithm could be made to create forge worlds as long as it was landscape only, which is all im asking for. I know it is impossible for them to create a generator that creates bases, weapon placements, spawn points, etc. But I think that a landscape generator is possible. Just sometime to make simple hills and valleys, like blood gulch and Valhalla.
What every they do, I hope that Halo 5:Guardians makes full use of the new tech for forge.
Meh, I don’t think the issue to consider is how many multiplayer maps we can fit into multiplayer. Just look at forge as it is now. Given a finite coordinate system and the finite number of items, item locations, and item orientations there’s no practical limit on what can be created and yet despite that we do have replayability issues because for all that geometric variability, the gameplay format itself just can’t support that much playtime. We don’t have the depth nor the intricacy and though you might say “well what we have now isn’t that much different to what we had in previous halo’s” that’s perhaps the point.
We need to do something to make Halo worth playing again before we look to further technical gimmicks to sustain our special flavor of PVP grinding. Would procedurally generated maps be something to consider there? Perhaps, but only under the strictest of limitations (which just makes the attempt questionable. In some things you want as much organic variety as you can get (ex. firefight, the campaign) but in others you need to have a much more controlled experience.)
