Preston Cole

(Forgive me, I don’t read much lore) What ever happened to Preston Cole? I know he was a commander during the early contacts with the Covenant, but where was he in Halo 2-3 and maybe 4-5?

Well if you want to read more on depth in Cole read halo evolution as it contains a bit about Cole.

In the early stages of the war Cole lead the largest human fleet ever assembled at that time against a covenant force equal in size. The battle was fought around a brown dwarf. Part way through the fight a mysterious group of human warships appeared and help destoy more covenant ships. After this a new covenant fleet containing 100+ ships arrived and lead Cole to order a retreat. Cole then took his flagship closer to the brown dwarf and baited the entire covenant fleet to come after him. As Coles flagship was descending into the brown dwarfs upper atmosphere. When the covenant fleet was to close to be able to flee Cole launched the entire complement of nukes his ship had into the core of the brown dwarf leading to nova that destroyed Coles ship and the covenant fleet.

It is debated whether Cole surrvived this as before the battle he had requisitioned a secondary ship that was attached to his flagship. After the battle analysis of the debris lead elements from oni to believe Cole had escaped in this ship. Rather than brand Cole a deserter oni decides to turn him into a martyr and a hero figure to the UNSC and humanity at large.

Hope this helps, had to do this a little rushed.

I hope we get a novel about that other human fleet.

There really is nothing more to learn about the fleet it’s self. It was lead by the belecose and probably was a fleet from a world that never officaly registered with the UEG.

Except that it was impressively organized and large for a fleet that was never registered with the UEG and did some legit damage to the Covenant. There’s plenty of backstory to expand upon.

Who made up the fleet? What are their philosophies? What worlds are they from? Where did they go? Have they fought before? Have the fought after? Are they from another government? Where are they now? There’s thousands of other questions that could be asked so I’m not sure why you think there’s nothing left to learn about them. We’ve had like a tiny micro-exposure…

Actually, the Io was left behind to cover his tracks by leaving the required destroyed materials on the battlefield. The Everest executed an in-atmo slipspace jump (years before Cortana attempted a similar manouver with the superior Covenant system aboard Ascendent Justice I should note) and escaped.

To add more to this story:
Cole fell in love with a woman and the UNSC discovered she was a undercover Insurectionist. Cole then later discovered that the Belecose was piloted by his ex lover. It’s rumored that he did what he did to be with her, but by destroying his soldiers and his fleet to be with her.
There’s so much to Coles life in lore, it’s sad he isn’t talked about more!

Battle Group India survived with more than 90% of its forces intact.
What Cole destroyed was a Covenant fleet of well over 300 ships. The largest seen at that point…and the largest seen for a WHILE as not even the Covenant could come back from loosing that many vessels to him.
So, the battle was a complete win for the UNSC and a personal victory for Cole as he got his Insurrectionist waifu back.
