My Brother and I have been fans of the Halo Series ever since we first played the Halo: Combat Evolved demo on PC way back when it was first released. Since then we’ve bought the limited/legendary edition of every Halo on release day. So, as expected, we both chipped in money and bought the Halo 4 Limited Edition and picked it up at the midnight launch.
Seeing as with Halo: Reach I redeemed all the preorder/legendary edition content on my account, then transferred the licenses to my Brother’s Xbox, we only figured it’d be fair for him to get the Halo 4 content on his account and he’d just transfer the licenses to my Xbox. (We’ve been doing this a long time with basically any DLC/Games we buy on the Marketplace)
Anyways, after we got home from the midnight launch, my brother fired up his account on my Xbox and redeemed/downloaded the content for me. Then he went upstairs to his Xbox and redownloaded the content for himself.
I had a midterm this morning, so I went to bed right after that and my brother stayed up all night beating the campaign. Once I’d returned home from class, I swiped the game, beat the campaign, and started going into multiplayer.
That’s when I noticed that I didn’t have access to ANY of the preorder items/limited edition content that had been redeemed on (So the licenses belonged to) and downloaded to my Xbox.
So, I’m wondering if this is just one of those many day-one glitches that 343i is dealing with, or if Microsoft really went that low as to restrict the preorder/limited edition content to only the account that it was redeemed on.
If that is the case, both my brother and I feel utterly betrayed. We’ve been riding along with this awesome game series for years, and now you can’t even let us enjoy it together?
I’m also wondering if this means that I will have to fork over another $30 for the War Games Season Pass.
If I do, it’s going to leave a really sour taste in my mouth with both 343i and Microsoft as a whole. That, added to the fact that I genuinely don’t agree with most of the changes put forth into Halo 4, could very well lead to the loss of another true fan of the series.
im sure the licenses for these are gamertag specific
Well… Ain’t that just dandy…
Thanks for the big middle finger, 343i. I’m pretty much done buying anything ‘Halo.’

they are all available after youve entered the code but you still need to reach level 50 to unlock them

So because you can’t cheat the system your not buying anything halo?

sigh
I should’ve expected ignorance and idiocy on the Waypoint Forums…
It’s not “Cheating the System” whatsoever. Microsoft created their DRM system specifically so people could do what my brother and I do.
If you want to pretend gamertag specific codes are exclusive to 343, then go ahead and call people idiots to make yourself feel better.
But guess what? Last week, I bought Assassin’s Creed 3. And do you know what happened when I redeemed all of my DLC codes? I found out they were specific to my gamertag. My roommate cannot play my DLC, and you can expect this to continue with other companies in the future.
There’s no point in having DLC exclusives if you can just transfer them to other gamertags. That’s why 343 has gone down this route. Otherwise, it’s just bad business for them and a slap in the face to those who pre-ordered from a specific retailer or bought a limited edition.

In all fairness, I called him an idiot for being one. He claimed I was ‘cheating the system’ when I was using Microsoft’s systems the way they were meant to be used.

It’s not transferring them to other gamertags at all! It’s allowing accounts that are active on the console that the content is registered to to access said content. Does that really seem so ridiculous? That’s not why 343i ‘went down this road’ at all. It’s simply another obvious money grab. They’re screwing over their community for an even more marginal at best profit. All it’s showing us is that we really just mean money to them.
It doesn’t make sense for two members of the same household to both buy their own copy of a console game. My Brother and I are definitely not the only ones who did this. I can also guarantee you we’re not the only ones screwed over by this, either.
Also, it isn’t a ‘slap in the face’ to all the people who preordered to allow people to share game content to other local accounts at all! It’s still a preordered game! Isn’t it more of a slap in the face to those who preordered to put out a DLC shortly after launch that contains all of the preorder bonuses? I’d think so!
