I would seriously hope this game is not only well received but well received for good reasons. I am probably in the minority here but I don’t have high hopes at all. I’ve been burnt 4 times in a row on 343i’s Halo now. (Halo 4’s awful multiplayer and graphical design, Halo 5’s awful campaign and just meh multiplayer and they kept the ugly design, the MCCs terrible, horrible, no good launch and now Halo Reach’s butchered re-packing version with glitches, a terrible armor unlock system, even though they nailed the customization, TU settings and DMR starts and audio problems)
That all being said, the design in the early looks does give me some hope. For me, I am almost unwilling to even chance this game. This will be the first one I wait 2 plus weeks for full and thorough reviews before I bother even trying it out. Because I’m tired of getting all hyped and getting burnt. It’s hard, because this one is really appealing to my nostalgia for the Halo 3-Reach era but I can’t let my wallet keep taking a beating for stuff I end up not even liking enough to sink more than just a paltry few hours into, because for me, coming up, Halo was supposed to be a game that was a good experience you could count on to enjoy for like YEARS. I still play 360 Reach.
Most people I actually know personally already have given up on the franchise as a bygone relic from a different age that’s trying to compete with powerhouse franchises that either never strayed so far away from their core while still evolving like COD, or newer, younger powerhouses like Apex, Fortnite, etc.
So given that the deck is stacked and their back is against the wall here, I think we all know what’s up. People are hungry for the next Halo. It’s timed with the next gen console. It’s gonna take in some serious money, but if it flops, it’s going to spell either the end of the franchise or maybe the beginning of the end. If they don’t can it outright (assuming it sells well enough but it gets critically shredded) then there may be one final chance to get it right with a potential Halo 7 and the sad reality is that if they get that chance, and limp on to Halo 7, even if it’s good, it might tank because of critical reception of Infinite. So a lot is riding on Infinite’s shoulders. It has to both harken back to the Halo of old and look forward to the future, attempt to reunite a fan base, please both old fans and newcomers, and do well enough critically and commercially to AT LEAST get one more game in. And I’m really hoping they realize those things are the objectives and not just pure graphical and gameplay performance for the sake of the stupidly named “Xbox Series X.”
This is almost going to have to be simultaneously a Halo:CE and Halo 3 at the same time in that it hits critical nostalgia receptors while also being re-inventive while chronologically following up Halo 5. I’m afraid that with such high buildup and hype it might suffer disappointment no matter what happens.
For the sake of one of my favorite game franchises, and the one that got me into gaming, I really do hope they stick the landing, and stick it well enough to justify not only my purchase of Infinite but also 7,8,9, etc and get it back to the days when I could just get it on day one and not worry if I wasted my money or not.
